Thumbs up Losing Touch with My Breeder

Prior to picking up my puppy, I spoke with my breeder several times and kept in touch quite regularly through e-mail. When picking up our pup, the breeder was very warm, welcoming and full of information and encouragement, assuring me I could contact them anytime.

Now I have my pup. The first couple times I contacted them for advice with regards to the pup growling and nipping, which we have worked through quite nicely. I have sent her some photos and asked a few more questions via e-mail, because I realize they are very busy and figured e-mail would be the easiest way to keep in touch as they could reply when they had the time. I have now sent a 3 messages and have received no response at all. There was nothing major as far as content in them, just keeping in touch with updates, etc. As a whole I have probably contacted them about once/twice per month.

Is this too much to expect from my breeder? From a breeders perspective, am I just being bothersome, or do you like to hear updates on how your pups are doing?

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

I send my breeder photos every month; she loves it. We still talk regularly...especially since the whole seizure thing .

You do have her email address right? Sometimes big files (pics) will go to the 'junk' folder by mistake.

I would call her and ask if she got the photos. See how she talks with you, and take it from there. I am sorry she is not there for you as much as you would like...but we still LOVE hearing updates on your baby !

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

Thanks Nishasmom. I have received so much more support and interest here than I have or probably will ever get from my breeder. I'm sure that I have the address right, as I have received a few replies. I will give her a call if I don't hear from her shortly, maybe I'm just getting blacked into spam.

Awww....that's a shame you are not hearing back from your breeder. There could be a legit reason, or some can't be too bothered after they make a sale.
Hoping you will hear back from them soon. I would think most breeders would love to get pictures, and updates about their puppies.

Baxter is four and I still keep in touch with his breeder, I send "grandma", pictures of her boy....and she is always thrilled with them...in fact she's put them in some publications that she is involved in.

It could also be that the show season is in full swing...and the breeder just is not around as much to answer e-mails.

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

I am still in touch with buyers from my first litter years ago. I love hearing about the dogs and how they're doing. I try to make contact at least every other month or so with every puppy i've ever sold.

I love to hear from people who have bought puppies from me and try very hard to keep track of and in touch with anyone who has a puppy of mine.

The fact your breeder isn't interested in you or your puppy any longer makes me question the breeder's quality. BYBs are notorious for letting you go once they have your money.

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

On occasion, it takes a couple of weeks sometimes before I hear back from my breeder....but I do hear from her. Even before I got my pup, if she didn't respond fast enough to an email, I would call. But, she is always available either way.

I would take Nishasmom's suggestion and call. Talking with her versus email will give you a better clue of her intentions (I hope :0 ).

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

With the 30 puppies I have on the ground, the only ones I have lost touch with are the 3 that don't respond to any of my emails/phonecalls. I hate not knowing how those pups are doing, however, they are also the farthest away from me, so I can't exactly just show up on their doorstep.

I think everyone who takes on the roll as 'breeder' needs to be there for their puppies and their puppies' owners for the life of the dog for whatever reason .... and I too love my 'pupdates'.

I update everyone when we accomplish something new or just have some new funny pics I want to share. Most people are eager to maintain a relationship with me and I with them. Sometimes it takes me a few days to get back to them, but I ALWAYS do.

I can't imagine a breeder not being responsive, but I know it does happen.

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

hmm, i'll admit, i've only known one breeder well, and i worked with her for most of a decade. i can't imagine her not wanting updates about her dogs.

really, the puppy that you sell is the sum result of major effort on your behalf. taking a bitch, titling her on both ends, socialising her and getting all the medical tests.

then you've researched at least 5 generations back on both the bitch and sire's lines, to make sure there's no obvious reinforced bad traits, or too blatant a line breeding.

time and effort going into the actual breeding, then waiting and further testing.

finally, you've gotten 4-8 puppies, each of them the result of half a years research, and countless hours worth of training and work. how could you not want to keep in touch with the guardians of your efforts?

for the OP, i'd hope this is just one of the cases where the rest of life interfere's with keeping in touch. keep trying, and keep letting us know about your puppy, even if you can't get hold of your breeder.

peace, eh?

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

I am sorry to hear that!!! My breeder and I have become good friends over the years. She has always been a wealth of information, as well as great support during those tough puppy times. She has always said how nice it is that she still has contact with all but a few of her puppy owners. Keep trying, maybe they have had a family situation or a computer problem. Good luck!

Re: Losing Touch with My Breeder

Thanks for all your replies. I plan to give the breeder a call in this upcoming week. At least there's a great bunch of people here that I can always get an opinion from at any time. THANKS!
