Talking Color Question

Rocky just had a litter (quite on accident..long story lol) and I was wondering if full blooded rotties could have a small patch of white on the chest? Only two of the males have it.

Re: Color Question

yes, they can get white hairs on the chest, you could have a few hairs, to a large patch. it's not that uncommon, but not a desirable trait.

Thank you :) It just struck me as odd considering I've never seen one and my vet wasn't sure

Re: Color Question

Winnie had some white on her chest but it ended up going away around 6 months of age.

How do you know she's PB....is she registered? Just curious...people often use that term illegally (PB)....can't call em PB without papers ( Animal Pedigree Act, Sec 64, Verse "h" )

Valentine, technically you are right. No way to know if a dog is purebred unless it is registered with a recognized registry, but the "Pedigree Act" only applies to Canada. I wish we had something like this in the states, but we don't.

Rocky, Yes, white patches on the chest does happen, in even some of the best lines. It is a throw back from when the breed was established. It is thought that it comes from when the dogs were crossed with native dogs like Berners or SMD. At least that is my understanding. The way to tell the difference between "a few white hairs", which is acceptable, and a true white marking, which is a serious fault, is to shave the spot down to the skin. If there is a patch of pink skin, (rottweilers tend to have gray skin) it is a true marking. If there is no difference in the skin color, then it is probably just a few hairs and will more than likely go away when the dog sheds its puppy coat.

Re: Color Question

Just out of curiousity... I know Janus isn't purebred, but his fur ontop of his head and on his belly went from jet black to brown... is that common to happen in mutts? You can see them in his photos (except the belly turning brown).
