Puppy Reservation

Maybe someone can shed some light on my "dilemma". I found what seems to be a good breeder-nice clean kennel, good looking "German" rotties. There were supposed to be 3 moms due lst of April, so I put a good deposit on a male...no word from her so I emailed her mid April. None of 3 dogs were pregnant, so no puppies. The deal was, since I was the lst one to give deposit, I would get the lst born male (no choice on my part or breeder's since "all of my dogs are show quality"). Now, breeder is saying they'll be in heat again in July and will try again. Do I wait?...get my deposit back and keep looking? She had pretty dogs but some didn't have as distinct markings as I wanted...wise words from "y'all" would be appreciated. (I may be in denial huh?...breeder has done this 30 yrs. so there is some experience there and I've seen pictures of the many offspring but I am becoming confused.)

Post Re: Puppy Reservation

Get your deposit back and run, run, run.
Anyone that would have 3 dog pregnant at the same time..is not a COE breeder. Are these dogs from Germany?? Any breeder that talks about "German" Rotties, is usually a BYB. Just because they have been doing this for 30 years does not mean they have been doing it right!

What titles have the females got on them? Did you see the hips, elbow eye and heart certifications on the OFA website for any of these dogs??

Not sure how this "breeder" could say all of their puppies are show quality???

Have you read on the Breeding Forum all of the stickies?

Seems to me that you have more research to do on what a good breeder is. Length of time breeding, and a fancy website does not make a good breeder.

Re: Puppy Reservation

You should definetly get your deposit back!! This is not a COE (code of ethics) breeder. Get the money. Do some more research and take your time. The outcome is definetly worth it.

I know from experience!!! You may be eager to have a puppy (just my opinion), but please take your time and spend that time learning. This site is perfect for that!

Re: Puppy Reservation

I'd get my money back like yesterday. This so called breeder is taking you and God knows how many others over their "30 years IN THE BACKYARD BREEDER BUSINESS" for a long hard and probably heartbreaking ride. Don't listen to their slick tongues. They know not what they are doing except making money on the tails of these poor dogs.

Please stick around and read all the stickys in the Breeders Forum, along with all the other stickys in the other forums. Ask questions and do searches. This forum is full of information and very knowledgeable people willing to share their wisdom and experiences all for free. Take advantage of it all and arm yourself with knowledge to find that COE breeder. You also may want to check into a reputable rescue group. Just another avenue to think about.

Re: Puppy Reservation

If you can get your desposit back, consider yourself lucky and thank your stars you don't have a puppy from this BYB.

If you can't get your deposit returned, consider it a lesson learned.

I echo what every previous poster said--run as fast as you can from this person. The "breeder" may've been doing what she's been doing for 30 years, but practice hasn't made perfect. She's simply a BYB perpetuating BYB practices--breeding three bitches at once. This alone says BYB.

In addition to going the breeder route, consider rescue. There are many nice dogs, of both sexes and all ages, in rescue looking for good homes.

Re: puppy reservation
Thanks to all of you! My heart said one thing but my head said another-I DO believe in rescue-I've done many in the past. There's SO much to learn about all the "letters, titles, awards, etc." I just want as disease free dog as possible who's oozing love! Thanks again and I WILL listen to all of you!

Re: Puppy Reservation

No breeder can claim that all of their pups are show quality - good grief, you are lucky if you have 2 or 3 in an average litter of 6 or 7. So for her to say that and say that the 'first born male' is yours, well, that is a crock of you know what.

I would venture a guess you may have some difficulty getting your deposit back, but I would start asking for it now. Who on earth would want 3 litters at one time? Not me, but to each his own, I second that this in no way sounds like a COE breeder.

Re: Puppy Reservation

Gotta agree with all the above. If the so called breeder does not give your deposit back, I would file a small claims action. Who knows how many other "deposits" they have taken?
Hopefully you have a contract or promise in writing.
Maybe if these people are forced to give back some deposits they won't be so quick to take them in the first place.
Sorry, but everything you have said leads to someone trying to make a quick buck by throwing a male and several female dogs together.
I would also wonder why three bitches in heat who were bred did not get pregnant? The odds just aren't right.
It all sounds too fishy to me.

Re: Puppy Reservation

There are con-artist "breeders" who are known for doing exactly what this person has done to you.... somehow there just always seems to be a "problem" with every heat and the pups never quite get born and the deposits are on hold "until the next heat".... etc etc.
There is even a website for the "customer club" of one such "breeder", people who are banding together to try to shut down the Tennesee woman who has ripped off all of them.
Good luck.

Re: Puppy Reservation

An ethical breeder will not ask for $$ until the litter is whelped and a contract is exchanged, or the very least, discussed. If I was you, I would spend a few days combing over the many educational threads that have been written on this forum. Also, don't forget that majority of ethical breeders will not accept a deposit until they know they have a puppy available for you--meaning a pup that fits your wants and needs. You have to do your homework to find such COE breeders, because they will not fall into your lap. It is also wise for you to learn about health clearences, titles, and other gargon, because if you don't sound educated, no COE breeder will take you seriously. Furthermore, you should understand how the puppy selection *should* happen. A good breeder should be the one selecting your puppy for you, not the other way around. Your "first pick of the litter" may not be the right puppy, which will have the qualities you are desiring for your wants and needs. It may even turn out that the litter produced will not have the right pup at all (it has happened to us many times), and in this event, you should have the option to stick it out until the right pup comes along, or move on. And for the love of Pete, please get past the whole "German vs. American" Rottweiler theme--many threads on this subject as well

So, as you can see, there is much to learn...happy reading

I am SOOOOOOOOOO hoping this is the case and that there are no puppies to be had.
Please go after these people with all you have, if there are no puppies they need to be arrested for fraud, and if there really were supposed to be three litters, they need to be scrutinized for the conditions they keep their dogs in.
I had ONE litter of puppies 20 years ago, ( long story, which will never ever happen again) and they were more work than you can imagine.
Wishing you the best of luck with these idiots and really, let any deposit you may lose be a good lesson on where to get a dog from.
Hint. Even if you have your heart set on a puppy, please read through some of the wonderful rescue stories, whether through rescue organizations or through a dog shelter.
My other half talked me out of a puppy and I adopted the most wonderful dog I have ever had. He could not be worth more if he came from one of our finest breeders here.

Re: Puppy Reservation

I am completely in agreement about the rescue and have been looking at sites in the southeast US area. My husband just wanted a really nice male (course I wanted a girl) but as long as I can get the dog that NEEDS ME, I don't care.
I have requested my deposit back, haven't heard from them yet...I hate to be the sucker that was born that particular minute but oh well....maybe not(???) Thanks for your concern and I'll keep the group updated. {My husband is a little funny about "rescues" but that's how we got the one we have plus 3 other dogs and they've been great! don't know why he worries-guess it's the unknown}...I'd really love to have a special needs rottie!
