Re: Puppy Reservation

Thanks for asking. She said she'd have the money in "November" (who knows why??) and she'd send it back then. I have noted this on my calendar to follow up! She apparently spent the money and has to wait to sell some more puppies (???). I consider myself somewhat of an idiot for being so trusting but how in the world do you know when you're new to it?!? Believe me, I'm reading everything I can on this website and others and plan to go to a show in August in Raleigh, NC just to observe....and talk to everyone willling to talk!

Did she say what year??

I would ask for this in writing - a deposit to "hold" a puppy is just that - it should not be spent till the healthy "right" puppy is brought home.

I hope your deposit wasn't a large sum of money - I am afraid you will receive the refund "when pigs fly".

You might as well forget about the deposit and chalk this up to an "expensive lesson".

Precisely why deposits are not a good idea - especially BEFORE a litter is even on the ground.

I can understand a breeder accepting money when the litter is 5-6 weeks old, but never before. At least at that age, a good breeder has an idea of what's in front of him/her, and can get the homes pegged out properly.

Re: Puppy Reservation

I do usually take deposits ahead of time BUT the money is placed into a dog account and NOT spent and if for some reason the buyer is not approved or there is no pup for them or they change their mind the money is sent back IMMEDIATELY

Re: Puppy Reservation

Just curious, did you ever receive a receipt for the deposit that you put down? The reason I ask is that check out your laws in your state. You may be able to press charges of FRAUD AND DECEPTION. Depending on how much your deposit was, if it's worth hiring an attorney. If it was me, I'd do it just on principle. I'm sure you have heard the old saying "screw me once, shame on you, screw me twice, shame on me". Well the second one is on you for letting her/him get away of telling you NOVEMBER!!!

Re: Puppy Reservation

Well I've beat myself up enough! I have a cancelled check for deposit. She lives far enough from me that small claims court would be a big pain, lawyer fees, forget it. A friend suggested I report her to the AKC. I do believe in doing things on principle but I think it's going to be easier to work an extra shift and make up some of the $$-and yes it was a good size deposit. From things I've been reading (dog breeder sites)many puppies are "reserved" with a deposit even before they are conceived. I'm getting gun-shy and nervous about talking with anyone else! Think pigs may fly in the fall? Oh well, MY heart was right and maybe what goes around comes around!

Re: Puppy Reservation

That's right Moose its called Karma....he/she will get theirs in time.

Sorry you were burnt, not everyone is like that. There are some very reputible breeders around, you just have to look and ask questions, LOTS and LOTS of questions and be very wary if they dont ask you any questions. These puppies they are selling are their babies and they will want them to go to a good home.

Go to show, watch, learn and ask questions. I would contact my local rotty club for a recommendation on an ethical breeder who will be mated soon or is expecting a litter soon, then check them out, see their other litters and find out how they've progressed.

Are you wanting a pet quality pup or show quality? If its show quality, go to some shows where the breeder is showing his/her dogs or where some of his/her past litters are being shown.

I am really sorry you got burnt and personally I'd be asking for weekly or fortnightly payments and not waiting until November, that's not fair on you. Its not YOUR fault she was stupid enough to spend the money, so why should you have to wait. You could use this money as a deposit for another puppy, money doesn't grow on trees (unfortunately) and if he/she cannot afford to pay you something each week or fortnight until the deposit is paid back in full, well you know you'll never get it back.

Some good breeders take small deposits, it just depends on the breeder. I'm talking about $100. for a deposit...and the deposit is returned if the breeding does not take, or there is no right match of a puppy for the owner.

Some breeders like to have homes lined up before they even think of breeding and taking a small deposit helps them know if the person is really interested.

Don't be gun-shy...just take your time...read and learn...you will find a good breeder.

Re: Puppy Reservation

Don't worry...I'm learning! What I want is a pet quality pup/young adult. A $500 deposit will NOT occur again. Unfortunately I'm in the middle of nowhere and such things as rotty clubs are no where close. I plan to call some of the breeders I've found online (just like I did hers) and really be nosey-they hopefully will understand. We even drove quite a way to see her kennel and it was nice, clean. The dogs stayed in runs and had outdoor houses. One or 2 came in the house at night for her protection but most were outside. Oh well, hopefully when the time is exactly right, the right one will come along (but I thought it had!). Thanks for the helpful suggestions!

Re: Puppy Reservation

that's a very hard situation to deal with... specially when u r promised one thing n at the end u get nothing! IMO I don't believe in putting a deposit specially with:
1. a pup that hasn't been borned.
2. a completely stranger whom u have no background n just the internet as feed back =P
my question at hand to the OP is, why didn't u ask for a proof of a deposit? specially with that amount.
now n days u can't relied on peoples ethic unless u have documentation to back it up. n even then u still have to becareful on whom u deal with.
