OFA Results

We finally received our OFA results for The Queen. We are very happy with the GOOD hip rating, but we are wondering about the elbows. Right is normal, but left is Grade 1 DJD. We are told this is still breedable. Is this true? The potential male we have picked is HD- ED-. Thank you in advance for your replies.

Re: OFA Results

IF the potential stud lives IN the US then he darn well should have his OFA elbows and hips too not just a foreign rating.

Aside from that yes you are correct in that DJD 1 in 1 elbow does not exclude from breeding AS LONG as the breeder is doing extensive research into lines and the dog's siblings and seeing what the elbow status of the family is and a bunch of other stuff I'm sure others will mention

However my bug a boo is all these imports here whose owner's never bother to have the dog re certified with OFA. Which BTW is mandatory if an ARC member wants to breed to an import

ALSO both dogs need to have their hearts certified by a board certified cardiologist and if the male is an import (I'm guessing yes) then a dopplar echo is strongly recommended

Re: OFA Results

Do you know what caused the rating of DJD1? DJD is a catch all term for non textbook elbows. Two of my current dogs are rated DJD1. I know what caused that rating and I know that the the "issue" that caused the non passing rating doesn't or won't affect the actual working part of the elbow joint. It also is not FCP (fragmented coronoid process), OCD (Osteochondrosis) or UAP (Ununited anconeal process).
Until you know what actually is causing the DJD1 rating, I would not consider the dog breedable. I had a bitch with OFA rated DJD1 elbows. She had FCP, tho the OFA did not check that box. GDC rated her as moderate six months later with incongruent process. Later it was called FCP.
If I were you and you were planning on breeding this dog, I would do my due diligence and make an appointment with an ortho specialist to confirm exactly what is wrong with that elbow. Once you know, you can make intelligent decisions.

Re: OFA Results

The dog I am thinking of using does not reside in the USA.

I do have a question. Is there any way of finding HIP/Elbow ratings on progency of a dog in OFA, if the dog itself does not have OFA hip ratings, ie hd- from Germany? Maybe I am doing the search wrong?

Re: OFA Results

the only way (and it's not foolproof) is to find a dog that IS OFA'd and sired by the dog in question and then THEIR 1/2 sibs by sire woukl show up on their listing on the OFA site.

It's not foolproof because not everyone gets the registration numbers of the parents right on the form. I've seen this a bunch of times. BUT it should show at least some if there are any

Re: OFA Results

Thanks, That is what I have been doing. Thought just maybe there was a better way! I was a little amazed and a little disappointed that the German Dogbase does not necessarily match what people list on websites! But, I am am in no hurry, and I know that Mr. Right will come along.

See 'ya in Kentucky!
