Talking Average litter size?

I am trying to find info on an average litter size for the rottweiler. I have an average in mind but if the breeders on this forum would tell me what they have experienced I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Average litter size?

It depends on the age of the sire /dam and the day during the heat cycle that she was bred on. I ALWAYS do a blood test to determine the day of ovulation then breed 24 hours later. I have had on average 8 pups each time. I did have 13 once and the one time I did not do a test to determine ovulation I had 2 pups.

Re: Average litter size?

I have heard that an average litter size is around 6 puppies, however this can vary either way. There is no guarantee on the size of any litter.

Litter size is more determined by the bitch, and reproductive tendencies like this tend to genetic to a degree. So, if the bitch's dam averaged 4-6 pups, her daughters likely will do the same.

Mothering behaviors are also passed down to daughters (what the daughter experiences in the whelping box, she will likely emulate as a dam), so good mothers tend to produce good mothers, and bad mothers tend to produce bad mothers.

I have seen rottweiler litters of one (my first breeding), and litters with as many as 14.
