Hips

How important are xrays for hip problems? Who is the primary authority on this topic? How long have tests for hips been done in the US or Germany? Is there a difference between OFA and PennHip on whom you would grant authority on hip problems?

I ask because I may have been duped, big time, by the breeder of the dog I bought. I can share more info on another thread, later. Right now, I just want the purest answers I can get to the above questions and could think of no better place to ask.

Re: Hips

I am sure others with greater knowledge will answer you. From what I know, a dog can get (and should) OSA certified at 2 years. This is done to check for genetic hip problems; if he/she doesn't pass, you should not breed them.

Before you start working (i.e. agility, running, carting) you should make sure your dog has certifiable hips. (to prevent injury/pain)

You can look up your puppies sire/dam OSA test results on the internet (if they have been tested).

Re: Hips

Thanks Nishasmom, if a dog has bad hips according to OSA would a good a grade by PennHip mean the dog has good hips?

Re: Hips

I am not familiar with the PennHip method; here is a link that compares the two (pennhip and OSA)

Good Luck!

Wink Re: Hips

I think you mean OFA? Anyways if a dog fails OFA then there is no way the same dog will pass penn hip. the only exception maybe being poor OFA positioning on a dog with tight hips. OFA is a single view with dog on it's back and legs pulled down. they look for how well a ball fits into the socket and how deep the socket is as well as the neck of the femur and other things that suggest the presence or not of HD, In Penn hip they do multiple views, including a distraction view pulling the hips out of the sockets to test laxity. the theory is that lax hips lead to dysplasia so a dog with lax hips gets a ?high? distraction index number and is not recommended for breeding. Pen Hip does not tell you that a dog fails just that it has lax hips and if you read their recommendation they don't recommend breeding certain "distraction indexes" they also rate the OFA style picture as DJD or no DJD. I have done both in the past

Look at some old pedigrees both German and US. OFA can be found way back. (20+yrs?)Back then dogs got a Very Good, Good, Dysplastic or something like that. anyways you can at least track OFA numbers even if no rating is present. a failing dog did not get a rating. With Penn Hip there is no database from which I am aware of. German dogs scores are also able to be looked up from now to many years ago. Hope this helps and I am sorry if I am not 100% correct. I am typing this from my understanding of your question

Re: Hips

I don't know, just that they are easily traced that many yrs ago. Did breeders that long ago even wory about HD? I am sure some did but it wasn't a standard as it is now. even only a few years ago elbow certs were not that important.

Not true. Don't know where you heard that, but they still do elbows.

I got my first dog in 1983... (not a Rottweiler, but a Boxer) His pedigree goes 3 generations back and I can read the HD status of all the ancestor except two!
My OLD Rottweiler training fellows could show the same for Rottweilers!

Now a day.. you will never get a DKK Rottweiler peedigree for your pups, unless (besides other thing) you can prove the parent (and ancestors) HIP and Elbow scores!

I can't remember the year when HIP X rays was required... but I know it was long time ago. The elbows, I think, was about 2002.

Re: Hips

I went back to the oldest American bred rottweiler in my Duncan's pedigree that had a hip rating and came up with Am & Can CH Rodsden’s Kluge v d Harque Am CD, RO-50
The RO-50 is OFA hips, 50th rottweiler certified with normal hips. He was born in 1964. I sure that responsible breeders were x-raying long before OFA came about.
