Young mother to be!

OK here I am standing at the check out counter at the gas station and this car comes pulling up with these huge beautiful rotties. This young kid comes in and I being a rottie lover told him he had some pretty rotts. He says ya he got the female a couple months ago at 8mo from a friend and he already had the male. Well guess what happend folks... She went into season and he let his male get her. Poor baby is ten months old, I asked if hes taken her to the vet and hes says yip shes pregnant.. Now these dogs like mine dont have papers, I asked him what he planned on doing for his girl and he said that he was thinking to have her put down.... What??? what is this kid thinking... granted those pups arent papered but there is people out there that will take these pups.... I have no idea if i did the right thing or not but I gave him my number and told him to call me if he wanted another option,Ill take her and her pups... I dont know my ignorance is showing again probably..... What would I do for these pups and mother... I could try and find a home for them, I dont know, did I do the right thing?

Well, you didn't have too many choices! Hopefully the kid will call you and you will have a chance to educate him and possibly rehabilitate him in caring for dogs. He is obviously ignorant about animals. God Bless you and I hope he calls and get the opportunity to turn him around. Preaching to him at that point would only have turned him off. If he calls you, at least he will be "open" for discussion.

Annamack - I know my thought here won't be received well by all - but it's too bad you couldn't recommend that he spay her immediately (terminating the pregnancy at the same time) - before she gets too far along. She's so young to face being a 'mom' For her sake, I hope he calls you........

Re: Young mother to be!

An idiot like that wouldn't have her spayed, easier to get rid of her. It's so horrible how people think dogs are disposable. That poor baby. You are amazing in offering help and hope for this poor girl. Unfortunately, this guy hasn't learned a lesson and probably won't.

Id bring her home and go from there if its ok to terminate the pregnancy and fix her I will other wise if its to late I guess Ill be able to get those rottie babys I wanted.

Re: Young mother to be!

If he calls, think about giving him the phone number to Rottie rescue operating in the area. Most Rottie rescue groups have approved puppy families waiting for puppies to come into their program and have fosters exeprienced in whelping.

The best thing, however, would be to abort and spay her if she's not far along. A puppy having puppies is wrong.

Re: Young mother to be!

Thanks AngelBunny I got the number to the one here in wisconsin, I think I seen a couple of other places here in WI also. I only pray that, that little girl is ok.. But after chasing these two little ones for the last hour I will have to contact one I dont think I could handel any more animals at this time plus my work schedual and kids of my own.
I do hope this kid calls me, so that I Can get this girl some help and some type of stable home for her.

Re: Young mother to be!

If he calls you, I'd suggest spay/abort as well. It will give the young girl the best chance at having a good life, and there will be less dogs overall to deal with.
Rearing a litter is not for the meek, and rearing a litter with a young mother who may or may not decide she's ready for maternal love is downright exhausting.

Wisconsin Rottweiler Rescue is a great place to call so long as the dogs are purebred Rottweilers.

Re: Young mother to be!

Can anyone tell us, exactly how many weeks into gestation, is still safe for a spay/abortion for the dog ?? I'm just wanting to educate myself for future reference.

Annamack, I applaud you... I confess that when we first started looking for our dog, (a year ago)... I had a fantasy about having "just one litter" before spaying her. Thanks to RDN for teaching me, through reading about your experiences and others' experiences too.

Re: Young mother to be!

awwww that poor poor baby! What a loser that guy is, wanting to put her down. Its HIS fault she's pregnant in the first place, maybe someone should put HIM down....stupid, stupid man

annamack, that was a lovely offer , i sincerely hope he takes you up on it. She would have a much happier life with you. If she isn't too far along, i too would opt for the abortion, she's just a puppy....

.

4-5 weeks maximum. Gestation period is 63 days/or 9 weeks (it's 1 week dog pregnancy to 1 month human)

Re: Young mother to be!

No nothing as of yet I keep hoping.... Ignorant people do Ignroant things I just hope that this guy actually takes a step back and sees what he is doing to his dog. I pray that he takes her in and terminates the pregnancy and does not euthinise her, or at least call me so that I can do this for her.
