Oldest Age To Breed

What is the German Standard of age limits on breeding of bitches and male?

I am in the middle of a discussion. AKC says 12 yrs of age, which strikes me as outrageous.

I am thinking it is 8 for males and 6-7 for bitches?

You may want to check with AKC as I think they may have lowered the age one age for bitches, and another for dogs. Not really sure but I think they may have did that a few years back and also after a certain age you need vet verification that the said dogs produced said puppies.

Re: Oldest Age To Breed

Every breed is different. for a small dog 10yrs old might be the dog's prime but for rotties that is "elderly". I would not breed a female Rott past the age of 7 and only if she is a YOUNG 7. I don't know about a male. I have heard that as they get older they tend to pass on more faults/ health problems to their puppies (this could be a complete myth but makes sense that their genes are not as good) I would have the male collected in his prime so it can be used at a later date if desired.

Re: Oldest Age To Breed

i agree to double check akc rules, as they are always changing. the website is American Kennel Club - akc.org .
as to age, what akc means is up to what age they will register, and after a certain age you need vet documentation that said dog and bitch are the parents. not that they encourage you to breed at that age.
and yes, what is not ok in age for a rott, might still be ok for a yorkie.
if a bitch has never been bred before, after 6 years of age you tend to run into more complications-higher chances of pyometria, infections, non-pregnancy, might not be able to have pups naturally, not a good mom, ect.-regardless of the breed.

Re: Oldest Age To Breed

forgot to mention the males...for older males-over 6:
as long as the male is in good health, has recently produced or had a recent sperm check if older, age does not matter(up to the limit of akc, then you need documentation).
males are at their best fertility between 18 months and 6 years. but i have known many at 10 years or so still going strong.
