How to create a Rottweiler?

I've read about different dog breeds and most backgrounds state the origin, "this breed was PROBABLY MIXED with". During the past few hundred years or more I have also read where different dog breed populations were VERY VERY low. It's hard to imagine today that a breed would some how just disappear or be given up on. I also wonder how many breeds of dogs were lost in time because humans failed to continue the lines.

I'm guessing most dog breeds do not have records of how they were created or at least not the older dog breeds. (Wolf with this breed and bread back to this breed etc...) As impossible as it may seem now if a dog breed is lost, is it lost forever or are their ways to get it back? First thing that comes to mind is Cloning and I guess that will save every animal on Earth now (for the most part). If we loose American Bald Eagles to a disease we can always clone some.

I guess we could go extreme and say war or plague has killed off most the humans on Earth and the last thing most people would worry about is dog breeds. If Humans make a come back hundreds or thousands of years later how easy would it be to bring back the Rottie or other dog breeds? If we did it once we could do it again right?

Re: How to create a Rottweiler?

Dog breeds start for a specific purpose ie you have sheep and need help, your dog (of no discernable breed) herds your sheep. Your neighbor's dog (of no discernable breed and the opposite sex) also is a very talanted herder. You breed them together, add in some other really talanted herding dogs and pretty soon you have a breed, then you keep records of who is bred to who and there you go.

Most breeds that we have today don't have the same purpose they were bred for but contests are set up to prove they can still do what they were bred for. I'm afraid if we don't join the fight, our rights to have dogs and breed dogs will be taken from us. There may be a few dogs kept in zoos but that will be it. I hope I'm wrong.
