Re: repeat breeding

That would be hard to say.....many breeders may do one repeat, other breeders may never do a repeat. The philosophy that I have heard is that IF you get everything that you want out of the first breeding then why would you bother repeating it? I don't know I repeated a breeding (first litter is 3.5 years old, 2nd litter is 6 months 2 weeks) and I'm just as pleased with the 2nd litter as with the first. Great movement, beauty, brains, drive. Its kindof fun with the 2nd litter....knowing how much the first litter accomplished....so its hard not to have higher than average expectations with litter #2.

I have never personally heard of more than one repeat breeding.....and for myself personally would never do more than one repeat......let's face it the majority of bitches that are owned by COE breeders may have 2 possibly 3 litters before being retired and spayed. Its nice to chose a different stud dog in between repeat litters for instance and having the opportunity to compare and contrast pups from the litters.....gives the breeder a nice idea as to their bitches' contribution to the babies.

Also something else I would stress is the time between initial litter and repeat breeding.......its nice to OFA the offspring of the first litter and see what you get before you repeat it and god forbid end up with 2 dysplastic litters or something.

If a breeder was doing back to back repeat litters, that would send up red flags for me because I would like to see the OFA results on litter #1.......before embarking on litter #2....just my thoughts!!

Re: repeat breeding

Yeah, that's not someone I'd take a puppy from. I can see repeating once, if you didn't get what you wanted the first time (I know two different breeders who had all-male litters when they wanted a bitch), but after that, there's no reason to repeat, IMHO. Even popular breeds tend to have limited gene pools, why limit them further by throwing those same genes out there over and over again? Someone who repeats the same breeding over and over again is breeding to sell puppies, not breeding for what I would consider a good reason.

Re: repeat breeding

IF she is breeding them back to back every time they come into heat she doesn't sound like much of a breeder. Having litters is hard on a bitch....to carry the litter, to whelp, to feed, etc. The "recovery" time between litters may be quite substantial. For instance with my girl's first litter she had 14 puppies.....after that litter her next litter was born one month before the first litter turned 2 years old as we purposely left several heat periods between litters to give the girl a chance to recover fully from the first litter.

I don't know if it holds true for most of the American rottweiler clubs but I do know for the RCC (here in Canada) that a COE breeder is prohibited from breeding more than 2 of 3 heat cycles. (Not sure who would want to).

She sounds like a poor quality breeder to me if she is breeding her girls that frequently....and I'm suspecting not bothering clearing the one litter before producing a repeat!!

Re: repeat breeding

I had this conversation few weeks back with a breeder. There is no real planned guide line but he said. He breeds every alternate heat. But earlier he used to breed on these basis.

1) 8 > pups, skip the following heat
2) 4 > <7 pups, breed - breed - skip
3) < 3 pups, can breed the next heat

This all depends how well the bitch is looked after.

I know lots of breeders who breed alternate heats and some even who does breed breed skip.

It depends on the breed and size of the litter.
