This has been hell. This should be a testimony to ANYBODY with an intact dog or bitch that does not intend to breed. Please spay and neuter
Definitely. I am so sorry about what you and more importantly Princess went through. I am glad things are looking better and hope they continue to improve.

If I were you I'd ask the owner of the father for a little financial assistance with the vet bills. His dog certainly contributed to the situation that nearly cost your dog her life. The least he should do is drop a little reimbursement in your direction.

Re: new mom due yesterday

Thank you for your honesty and candor about the situation. I wish Princess and her singleton puppy a speedy road to GREAT health and many more years as your companion. As sad and scary as the events have been for you - I almost wish your thread was a stickey - so that others may read it and see your first hand account of how badly things can go wrong by letting a female have an unplanned litter of puppies........I'm so glad you didn't lose her and that your powers of persuasion were good enough to get her medical care in that urgent situation!

Re: new mom due yesterday

I'm sorry for the ordeal you have gone through - for Princess as well. I'm glad to hear that Princess and her one puppy are doing well for now. Please keep us updated.

Like others have said - I do hope some newbies (or oldies) read this thread and realize that "breeding" is not all about fun, cute puppies and $$$$.

Re: new mom due yesterday

What an awful experience for you and Princess. I hope that Princess continues to recover and that pup is doingOK. I assume they removed the uterus while they were at it, since it was torn?

I agree that this thread should be a sticky. Might help someone else down the road!

Re: new mom due yesterday

Yes, I agree with the "stickey thread" suggestion. Part of this experience could happen to anyone, whether the breeding was intended or not. This is what can happen, and worse.
Princess is now completely spayed!!!! Sadie (her baby) will be spayed when the time comes as well.

Re: new mom due yesterday

I just wanted to say I'm glad Princess is doing good from such a scary experience. I didn't post originally as I'm not a breeder and had nothing of value in advice to assist you in the whelping process. Still keep us updated on how she and the new pup are doing. Wishing a speedy recovery for both mom and pup!

Re: new mom due yesterday

Princess, I agree with the others. I am sorry you had to go through what you did. Hopefully mom and pup will continue to thrive. Keep us posted.

Keep in mind there have been many discussions on here about raising single pups. Issues ect that they have. You may want to start reading up on those as it sounds like you will be having your hands full.

Re: new mom due yesterday

Hi everyone. Well today is day 4 and both Princess and Sadie are doing good. Princess is a great mom! She lays with her baby and when she feels like getting up she pokes her under the little heating pad we have in her box. She licks her all over the bed and Sadie seems to love it. The little one doesn't cry or squeal very much but is sooo strong! She climbs up and over everything and sleeps in between mommas legs or up around her neck. When we hold her she likes to crawl up to our necks and go to sleep. Yes we are definately keeping her. Everyone wants her including the neighbor with the intact male. Bet if I told him she would cost 2000 dollars (about the amount I've spent so far on vet bills) I bet he wouldn't want her that bad. (Just being a little catty here) I really haven't confronted him about the dog because it was Princess that went over there. He has one of those electronic fences so his dog stays in the yard.
Anyway, Princess is healing really well. She's almost back to her old self. She still loves her car rides and I can't even pick up my keys without her thinking she gets to go (she always does). She is going for her walks and eating, drinking, urinating and having regular movements so it seems like everything is going well as far as her health. Her staples come out next monday and another vet checkup for her and Sadie. I'll let you all know how that goes.
I really do appreciate you all! It's nice to write all of this down and it mean something to other people. Thank you for caring.
Take good care.

Re: new mom due yesterday

What a harrowing experience. I am glad it worked out as well as it did.

What a lesson you learned--and what a hit to your pocketbook!

I plan on bookmarking this thread so when I see posts by newbies wanting to breed their dog, I can share your terrifying experience with them. You came this close to losing Princess.

Surely others can learn from your experience.

The other lesson to be learned is that invisible fences are just what we say their are--dicey containment devices because they don't keep animals out of a yard.

Re: new mom due yesterday

Sorry I don't have any way to post pictures right now. I'll try to get them up as soon as I can. We just got back from the river and left my oldest son to babysit. Sadie slept while we were gone and is now nursing. Her little markings are starting to really show and she has a huge head. She looks A LOT like a little rottie pup. I don't care what she ends up looking like though, we love her. I know it's too early to tell but she seems like a calm and good natured little sweetheart and doesn't mind being handled at all.
You know I've learned so much since I started first reading these postings. I've had Princess for about 7 years now and never have thought too much about the fact that she's a Rottweiler. Until we were discriminated against after we moved down here to the beach and a lot of places wouldn't rent to us because they don't allow Rotties or Pit Bulls. I couldn't believe it. We had owned the house we moved from and never had any problems. Princess is a great watch dog/protector but has never had to bite anybody to prove it and generally likes everyone. Anyway, I now realize what a responsibility it is to own a rott. and I feel so blessed that I have a wonderful ambassador for her breed. Thanks for all the great information on this site. And for all the thin-skinned people that I've seen postings from (not on this thread), they aren't here to learn anyway.
