Re: first time breeder!

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) go to their website..you should also have their hearts, and eyes done. A simple phone call to your vet would probably gain you most of the answers you are seeking.

Also, in order to be considered an COE breeder, you should have working titles (because, afterall, this IS a working breed) and they should be finished champions.

Not only do dogs being bred need health clearances on them, they also need health clearances on sire and dam, several generations back.

In addition to conformation titles, since this is a working breed, you need to put working titles on any dogs being bred.

As far as how much showing (and training costs to prep for those shows) costs, I have no idea. All I can say is that I've spent scores of hours in class, hundreds of dollars for classes, piles of money for show entry fees, lots of money for gas to get Mox and me to shows, and back home again, and oodles of time.

Personally, I think if you're focused on how much things cost, you shouldn't be breeding. Having my dogs is my hobby. Training and working my dogs is a hobby. I don't care what it costs because I'm doing it for the love of being a team with my dogs.

You didn't answer my question--Where did you get your dogs?

If you got them from a pet store, bought them from an ad in the paper, got them from a friend or friend of a friend, adopted them from a shelter, found them wandering the street, or some such, chances are they likely aren't suitable breeding material.

So what the "breeder" is a four hour drive from anywhere? What does distance you drove to get your dog have to do with the quality of your proposed breeding stock? And the fact you got your female from your cousin in Brooklyn who purchased her dam and sire from a "breeder" in CT also doesn't mean a thing.

What does mean something are the titles and health clearances that are on these dogs.

And they are, what, exactly??

Bluntly, if they don't have any, you're breeding trash. Trash because they haven't demonstrated they're worthy of being bred. This doesn't mean your dogs aren't nice pets. Just means that dogs being bred need to be held to a much higher standard than just being nice pets.

Again, I urge you to read thru the postings here in Breeding to find out what real, bona fide breeders do.

Then, read thru the postings in Rescue to find out what BYBs do.

It seems to me you still are not understanding.
Have you read any of the "stickies"? Please read this thread:
http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...nice-pets.html

The sire and dam of your male...what titles and health certifications did they have?
The sire and dam of your female...what titles and health certifications did they have?

If you don't know, or they had none of the above...it means that your dogs come from BYB, and may have been someones "nice pet"...but they should not have been bred.

Just like your dogs should not be bred. This is why the breed has gone had so many problems with temperament and health.

Spay and neuter your dogs...and enjoy them as the " nice pets" that they are.

Gina

Why why why... I just don't understand...
Just because YOU deem your dogs to be of breeding quality doesn't mean you should do it. It is obvious by your post you have absolutely no clue what you are doing. 15 months is far too young to breed your bitch

Please just leave breeding up to those who sincerely care about our breed and have spent many years researching and educating themselves on how to train, title, obtain health clearances etc...

Please do not contribute to the back yard breeder problem...

Re: first time breeder!

Truth be told, we have another BYB due to the high breeding standards set forth by the wonderful AKC. You would think being a multi million dollar registry they could afford breed wardens like in europe. You would think that instead of being worried about collecting your registration money they would be more concerned about setting a higher breeding standard to keep our breeds from being ruined. THANK YOU AKC!!!!!!!!!

Re: first time breeder!

Did you say your female is 15 months old? She is obviously not OFA certified. Please,Please pretty please don't breed!!!This isn't something you decide to do because you think you have nice dogs. It is an art and a science, and can take years of diligent work just to gain a fundamental understanding.

If you absolutely feel you must breed, I would suggest you read up on code of ethics breeding. This will help to get a rough idea of what should be taken into consideration before breeding.I would definately also join a rottweiler club to get some kind of mentorship in the area of breeding(Don't do it on your own!!!).
