| Re: Mother has rejected the runt I'd have the runt checked by the local vet usually the mother knows when something is wrong with the puppy. You can get formula and bottles and a heating pad and feed the runt, you have to keep it warm and clean it and massage the tummy the mother does this to stimulate digestion and move its bowels but I would call the vet for advice. |

| Re: Mother has rejected the runt When did she have the pups? Last I knew you were waiting Check the pups mouth on the roof of the mouth. If you see a spilt/ crack/ opening she has a cleft palate and should be put to sleep. Otherwise you can attempt to feed her (see the instructions in my raising pups article in the link already posted above) But my experience is that if the mom totally hates a pup there is often a reason (as long as she is being a good mom to the others)

| Re: Mother has rejected the runt Have you milked the Mom for the puppy? The puppy needs to colostrum from Mom, to develop immunities. This is very important. You need to do this today. Milk as much as you can (even if it's just a few cc's) and put what you don't use in the frig. Also, you might think of a karo syrup/pedialite mixure every few feedings. This keeps blood sugar and electrolites up. The puppy needs to stay warm and very hydrated the first few days.

| Re: Mother has rejected the runt if the pup won't eat, you can also tube feed them, that way they are still eating |

| Re: Mother has rejected the runt at this age, the main things are...keep pup warm, not hot. feed every 1-2 hours until stronger. stimulate to go to the bathroom by rubbing softly a warm moist gauze or cotton ball around anus and penis/vulva. tube feed if not nursing. help pup onto its mother's teats. patience is needed. a drop of sugar water or karo syrup under the tongue will help with glucose if a bit weak. see your vet as soon as possible and take all pups and mother. mother should be checked to make sure no pups are retained and milk is good. puppies should be checked for any deformities or problems. tails/dewclaws are done between 2-4 days of age. good luck with pups!

| Re: Mother has rejected the runt I would see if your vet will spin down some plasma from moms blood and feed it to your pups, especially the runt as she seems to not have gotten any colostrum. 4cc's of plasma for a newborn will give the equivelent of 21 days of antibodies, which will help them thru this early stage. Also get some goats milk or Esbilac(SP) and bottle feed the runt every 2-3 hours for the first week and make sure you are keeping them warm. Also do not give up on getting the runt onto its mom, try the back nipples as they are smaller ususally and easier for the small pups to latch on. Good Luck and Happy Holidays. |

| Re: Mother has rejected the runt Well so far so good, I have been taking care of the lil girl myself and she is doing well, I actually had her nurse on another dog that had puppies and she did good, her mother is slowly accepting her I take her to nurse on her mother several times per day and then keep her with me at night and bottle feed. Hopefully in a couple days I can just leave her with the mother for good, so we will see. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks to all for the advice especialy "fronterRotts" for al the advice. I just hope the times she did allow her to nurse the first 2 days will help her with her immune system. I bought some puppy milk from a feed supply that said "colustrum" added??? I don't know if that is the type I should be getting or what. I am just trying anything really, today is the best day so far the mother has been with her the whole day since 10 am and all is going good, I don't know how much longer I should keep her with me or should just let her go back with her family. My son moved the puppys and mom out into the garage and it's cold where we live so Im really not sure if i should let her be with them since she is about 1/2 the size of the others. Anyhow everyone on her I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!! Yetta |

| Re: Mother has rejected the runt Thanks for the link Gina, I was wondering what the outcome was but had missed this thread. I agree 'It's far too cold to have Mom and babies outside, bring them in ASAP!' You live in California but it's still too cold out to leave them outside and the benefit of them being in the house around all the household noises, smells, interaction, etc. is really important to the pups.
