Want to be a Rottweiler Breeder

Hi,

I want to become a rottweiler breeder because I really like the breed and its # 1 or 2 in the most popular breeds in Sri lanka asper the kennel club.

I am importing some semi adult dogs who is bred from champion stock. This is my foundation stock. My first question is how often can i breed the bitch - i have heard that some breeders breed every alternative heat and others do a breed - breed - miss - breed - breed -miss. What will be the best practice. Also how big should a kennel be for a stud dog and for a whelping bitch.

I live in a tropical country so cold weather is not a problem.

Any design would be helpful. I also want to keep 2 bitches together and seperate them when they are in whelp - is this a good practice. I dont want my dogs to be lonely.

The first thing you need to do is contact a GOOD COE breeder and learn from them for years before you even think about breeding. You will need to show and title your dogs before breeding. You will need to make sure the sire and dam are both tested and cleared for hips, elbows, hearts and eyes. Hips and elbows are done at 24 months. If you don't know the basics (from your post above about how often you can breed your bitch) you have a LOT to learn before even attempting it. Why do you want 2 bitches together? Rotties can be same sex aggressive so two bitches together is not a good idea. You should not become a breeder because "you really like the breed." Do a search here in the breeding forum - there is a lot of good information on what it takes to be a breeder. From the question you have asked, you have a few more years before even thinking about it. Edited to add: I just read a past post from you - if you have already shown and bred dogs before - why are you asking these questions?

If you start today, and do it properly, you might be ready to breed a rott in about 4 or 5 years.

I also went and read some of your past posts. In February 2007 you mentioned getting a 3.5 month old puppy. Your puppy is now about a year old, yes? Why are you importing dogs when you still have work to do with your current dog?

I love the breed too, but I have never thought of being a breeder. I have many reasons, but an important one is that supply (puppies/dogs) already exceeds demand (good homes).

Re: Want to be a Rottweiler Breeder

I hate to say this, but it sounds as if your so-called breeding program is just what they are doing in some other countries. It's basically nothing more than back yard breeding to raise some money.

There is so much more to breeding than just putting two dogs together. You need to read all the stickies at the top of the Breeding forum. I don't know what type of health testing is done over there and I would wonder if you had hip and elbow prelim's done on the dogs you are import in to your country prior to having purchased them. The dogs you are importing are old enough to have been tested and certified against eye and heart problems. Has this been done?

**What DO the breeders in your country test for in terms of health?
**At what age do you start breeding dogs in your country?
**What type of dog shows do you go to over there? What do you compete in?
**If you have to even ask questions on how often to breed your bitches, then you are not ready to be a breeder.
**How do you even know that the pedigrees on the dogs you have purchased will be compatible? What type of research have you done on them?
**Are the sires and dams of the dogs you are importing titled?
**What type of health certifications do they have?

If you don't show your dogs to earn titles to indicate that they adhere to the breed standard and if you don't do health certifications on your dogs to make sure they are not carriers of HD, ED, heart and/or eye diseases and problems, then you are not an ethical breeder.

Please find a mentor, take a few years to educate yourself, go to tons of shows and learn about structure and THEN evaluate your dogs to see if they are compatible and qualified to be bred.

Edited: I see in some other posts that you already have imported a few dogs and have a new puppy. Exactly how many dogs do you have and what are you long-term plans for them? You are asking a lot of questions about breeding, but don't even know how to crate train your puppy. What is going to happen when you have a dozen puppies at once?

And read this post about keeing two bitches together.....it can be done, but very often it is a disaster waiting to happen if the owners are not educated Rottweiler people and know the warning signs of impending difficulties between the two bitches. http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/beh...t-bitches.html

So true. If you follow the link below there are currently more than 3,000 Rottweilers listed on petfinder alone that need homes!!! Granted a lot of the dogs listed as such really aren't. I have nothing against people that breed quality dogs but if I were you I would contemplate this when deciding if you want to start a breeding program.

Keep in mind that the OP is from Sri Lanka, an island off the coast of India. I doubt if the Petfinder.com information will have much effect on him. :-)

Re: Want to be a Rottweiler Breeder

I did and I have been to Sri Lanka before. Do you have any idea how many homeless at large, half starved dogs I saw? I guess if I lived there I would be a dog lover first and a Rottie fanatic second by helping the homeless dogs that roam and search through garbage in order to survive. Now I don't know where in Sri Lanka he is vs. where I visited but I can't imagine it would be much different.

Re: Want to be a Rottweiler Breeder

Let me answer these questions. I am active in sterilising and vaccinating homeless dogs too. asper a recent study we have 2million homeless dogs living on the road. We have only 20 million humans. We catch, sterilise and release them back to the road where they were caught.

Theses dogs are suffering as people are not feeding them now by law. Dog shelters are not doing too well because of the lack of funding as you all know that sri lanka is not doing too well with the war.

Pure bred dogs are doing much better but they too are on the decline because of the rising cost of living.

Aprt from all this, OFA guys have replied me and they are able to test my dogs. I need to get my dogs x rayed and get my vet approved otherwise i am going to spend a bundle on the courier fees to exactly halfway around the world.

If your vets have the ability to record xrays in a digital format, they can be submitted electronically as long as the vet has registered with OFA and set this up prior to transmission.
