Good. Now you can educate others. Maybe save someone else the worry you are going thru right now with your pups heart problems.

As you can see many others have waited much longer than you to get a pup. That was the first thing that set me off. Your need of "instant gratification". Second, in a post you said you would "probably" not do it again. I took your use of probably to mean that you would actually still consider that option. Since you have clarified that I am appeased.

Please keep in mind that none of us here knows everything. I am far from an expert, but thank you for being open to listening and learning.

Give the guy a break, he is here and is trying to learn.
The great thing about buying from a good breeder is that you most often have to go on a waiting list. This gives you a chance to save and put away the money. Often you must send a deposit, and that goes towards your future puppy...and then if you have to wait 6 or 9 months or even a year...most people can put away and save $100. or $150. per month to pay for their future puppy.

If you pay $500. for a BYB puppy and then spend another $500-1000. on medical bills in the first year...there is not much of a bargain there.

Having dogs is expensive. If people don't want to get a well bred puppy from a COE breeder and feel they cannot afford the cost, they can adopt a dog from a rescue that is all vetted (spayed/neutered, vaccinated , wormed and HW tested) for about $350. and you will know the temperament and health of this dog. There is also an adoption from a shelter as an option, usually under $100. for this. No need to ever go to a BYB. Just have to be patient and learn to wait.

I've also never understood the "it's so expensive to get a good dog". If you are so concerned about the initial cost, maybe you shouldn't get a dog in the first place.

The buying of the dog is the cheapest part, even for an expensive dog. Factor in food, training, vet bills, toys, kenneling or housesitting, extra security deposits if renting, increased homeowners insurance in some cases and every year you have spent more than the dog cost initially.

One more reason why if people actually took the time to think about all the costs incurred in owning a pet, more animals would be neutered/spayed and there would be fewer animals in the shelters.

While spending that year that should go into researching (unless you're very well connected to begin with because you ALREADY DID THAT), and then waiting for the breeding for another 6-12 months.......wouldn't it make sense to put some money away each month in anticipation of the expense to purchase?

A purchase is only an all-at-once thing if you haven't PLANNED FOR IT.

In Australia we have 'Pet Insurance' it covers you for things that could happen. Its a good investment to make just incase something does happen. You are then covered for a majority of the expenses and its not that costly either for AUD$410.40 per year or $36.20 per month ($100 excess, you pay the excess and they cover the rest). Coverage is as follows:

This covers Vet Fees (illness and injury includ hospitilasation referral and complementary medicines $15,000 each year.

Death from Illness $2000
Death from Injury $2,000
Bording Kennel Fees (If YOU are hospitalised for more than 4 days) $2000 each year
Advertising and Reward $2,000
Loss by theft or straying $2,000
Holiday cancellation cost (if your dog has urgent surgery or goes missing up to 7 dats before or while you are away) $2,000

This is a small price to pay for piece of mind if you dont think you could afford it if something went wrong with your dog.

Re: Sickening just sickening-What newspaper ads from Puppy Mills look like

well like I said... all of you know about all of this breeding stuff but I (like most of the people) DID NOT. I'm not into the breeding business nor shows... the only thing Im good at is taking care of a rottweiler and having it as a part of my family. I had one for 8 yrs, but didn't buy it myself. When I moved to quebec (from Germany), I realised that there are very little rottweilers here and that they are WAAAY too expensive! In fact, I also found that (according to the definition of a BYB that I've learnd here recently) aprox 98% of rottweiler breeders here are BYB! Therefor I just assumed that this is standard here in Quebec and after visiting my BYB, I tought of his paperless female to be very much according to standards and without a folt (with a GREAT temperament!) The stud wasn't there but his papers assured me well enough.

Sooo, any average guy (in this area) without the knowlege provided here on this forum, WILL do the same thing that I did. Quality puppies remain way out of reach, for an average person (money wise, and breeder wise...) and even BYB puppies are expensive here!

This all sounds great now, and it's very cristal clear to me (what are you guys trying to explain to me) but at that time... I HAD NO CLUE about selective (paper only-dogs) breeding and it did make perfect since to me, to buy the puppy that I did. I had no clue about this waiting list thing so I didn't have the same perspective as people that know alot about this. You're just acting as if I was supposed to be born knowing... that's why I feel attacked

Finaly, some1 said something about how BYB puppies are suffering while implying my puppy's health. Maybe so, but let it be clear: my puppy is NOT suffering atall and I don't see any reason why would it suffer in future!

Finaly, what can I say, if there's going to be a next time for me, I will do it the right way FOR SURE!

Thanks to yall!

I never said you couldn't afford your puppy, I simply quoted you saying you couldn't afford to spend $1000 on a pup.

Please do yourself a favour and don't spay your girl until she has gone through at least one heat cycle (1 year of age is suffient). There are many articles on the high number of incidents related to crutiate ligament tears and spaying/neutering dogs too early.

On another note, when and if you are ever ready to purchase your next Rottweiler, visit the Rottweiler Club of Canada. There are two COE breeders listed under the Quebec section of the Breeders Directory that I would highly recommend.

Max,
Need I remind you that after you stated how I couldn't afford to spend $1000 on a pup your next phrase was something like this: "Then how do you think to be able to afford taking care of the puppy (vet, food....)"

Let me brake it down to you,
I CAN afford to take care of a puppy - I CAN"T afford to pay (1000$) for it more then what I did. geeez

A well-bred dog, regardless of breed, is not worth bargaining over. But that's just my opinion.

Let me break it down for you. There are plenty of reputable breeders that throw a pup with a fault that will sell much cheaper even sometimes GIVE YOU if you have done your research and feel your a good placement home!

If you can't grab one of them up then rescue do NOT go pet store or BYB to get a pup. You will get the same quality at a rescue center for the same if not less money. You help rescue and help put BYB's out of work!

Its really that simple! And I didnt read the whole thread so may have missed your reply as a reply to someone else or so forth. It was just me making note to the common post that people dont want to go through Good breeders due to price. Seriously many home fault dogs at cheaper prices then most BYB's even free sometime if they trust the home!

And my fault I mean they may have a white hair or weak ear...etc...LOL! Crap happens even in the best of lines.

Not if you want "instant" puppy. Then you go and buy the first puppy that of course is close to you.. throw the money down and you have a pup.
Rescues make you do nasty things like fill in applications, and do screenings and home checks. Then you still may have to wait for the right rescue dog to come along that suits your family....can you imagine having to wait??

Even shelters or petfinder dogs may not have dogs close to you....so of course you cannot wait or make a long drive....you need a dog instantly.

Good breeders make you wait also...and you must be patient and go on a waiting list....and they also charge WAY too much. They also want you to fill in an application and talk to you ,and screen you, and may even want to call your vet and your obedience trainer to see what kind of dog owner you are. Can you imagine???

Many people want instant pets...instant gratification...they want one, and they want it now. That's why pet shops do so well...that cute puppy in the cage must be yours. Throw the Visa card on the cash desk...and you got a puppy. No questions asked...only if they can sucker you into buying a crate, leash, bowls, toys, food, etc.
Ads in the paper are a quick way to find an instant pet too...give them a call and of course they want you right over...to see the puppies. They often just take cash...but if they are desperate enough..a cheque will do also.

No one seems to want to wait to add such an important member to their family....that's why rescues and shelters are full.

Re: Sickening just sickening-What newspaper ads from Puppy Mills look like

LOL Bruinies mom what is even funnier is that you dont have to "WAIT" to find a nice stray with no tags and just save rescue time and grab the damn dog. If your smart you will temp test him, vet check him and your home free..., atleast in Texas after three days of careing for anydog not claimed in that time with proper signs out. And no IM not talking about your local scum SELLING pups or GIVING away pups at your local WALMART(thats another thread!...LOL)...IM talking actual strays!

Not that I condone keeping a dog you KNOW belongs to someone else but here in Texas there are stray GOOD TEMPERAMENT Labs, Rotts, Pits on almost every damn store front looking for food! These dogs are better, actually in some cases ARE MUCH better then the dogs you plop down 300-500 for with a BYB or pet store!

Hell if you find out after a few days they are not want you want, Call rescue!....LOL.....

My point is when going to a BYB or a pet store your crap shoot is about the same if not worse then grabbing a stray. Atleast with a stray you are helping rescue...LOL!

I waited 11 years for my pup. It absolutely amazes me that people think a few months is waaaaayyy to long to wait!
