| Re: Whelping Most breeders use a box that is at least 4'x4', usually larger (4'x6'). Mine is set up so that the last 2' is the "potty room." There is a wall that divides it, the plans are in Muriel Freeman's book. Pig rails are generally set at 3 or 4".

| Re: Whelping Not knowing how experienced you are or how much you know, here are a lot of different threads on having puppies, problems associated with the whelping, a list of items you should have on hand and possible dangerous situations that can happen while a bitch is whelping. You can never be too educated about whelping, there are so many things that can happen and you don't want to run the risk of losing your bitch or any of the puppies. Read through all of these and you can use the search feature (up on the top toolbar) to search for even more. And, please come back and keep asking questions if any more arise as you read these threads. We are here to help! I have a few questions that might help us give you some more information: When is your girl due? Do you know her exact breeding dates? Is this her first litter? Has a vet confirmed the pregnancy? How far along is she? How old is she? Since you have never whelped a litter before, do you have someone that is experienced that will be there to help you out and look for possible signs of trouble with the whelping? http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/vet...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/vet...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/bre...elping+puppies Good luck!

| Re: Whelping Thank you for your help its so nice to have some one take the time. The pupies are due in September around the 18th i'm a little worried as they will be born in the cold weather. This is her first litter she is now 3 1/2 and i felt that now she should be old enough. It is to soon to know if she has taken or not, so i have not seen the vet. Really i'm getting to excited to soon but i like to be prepared. I have bread with dogs before, with collies, and never had any problems we never lost a pup. A rott is so different and lots of people have said i will have no end of problems with her so its nice to know what to expect. Thanks again |

| Re: Whelping I used a child's plastic swimming pool; however, I slept on the couch for a week to make sure she didn't lay on a pup. I had one pup that could climb out at 2 weeks. He would crawl up on mom's back and go over the top of it and take a trip around the room. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep for the first few weeks. |

| Re: Whelping When I found out the Rott I adopted was pregnant I was told from the vet it was to late to spay and let her have the pups, My husband built a whelping box (took him a few days) He made it with plywood and rails,it had an opening that she could get out of but the puppies could not, I to slept down stairs with her so she didnt sit on any but as soon as I walked up to use the bathroom she did I was so sad I had a migrane for 2 days from the stress, after 2 days she went from having 6 pups to only having 2 survive (lack of care before I got her) I wish you luck with your pups, I will leave the breeding to the professionals I cant do it again
