Lightbulb Tail Docking

We have puppies due in exactly one week and are looking for someone to dock the tales but who is registered, as we have had trouble before with the issue. We live in the north east of england if anybody that can help.

Re: Tail Docking

How about the vet that has been seeing the mom of the litter? I would assume the vet is able to handle such a thing.

Makethe appointment, pack up momma dog and the puppies and head off to the vet when the pups are less than 5 days old. Everyone can then get a quick check up from the vet whilst the tails are being done.

Re: Tail Docking

You could try contacting the CDB (campaign for docked breeds), who will put you in contact with a vet in your area who is happy to dock.

Any reason you don't want to leave the tails on?

Re: Tail Docking

I know breeders who dock their tails but I am not a big fan of this. One litter I looked at the breeder didn't band the tail the right place and the best male in the litter ended up with his tail a tad too long. I was talking to my vet and she said someone just brought in a whole litter of Boxers with their tails in various stages of infection. Some had to keep their tails and the others lost too much tail and the puppies were in pain.

I think the person who responded from England gave good advice. There is absolutely nothing wrong with docking tails when done by a professional at the appropriate time. Good luck with your puppies.

Re: Tail Docking

In docktailing, I cut it at 3 days old, I have tried also after one week as adviced by my vet, but I feel sorry because I have seen that the puppy can feel it already the pain of cutting (it is like amputation already). Anyway, my puppies right now are all in good shape.

Re: Tail Docking

We took our puppies to the vet to have their tails docked at 3 or 4 days of age. The owner of the stud dog told us to stress that we didn't want a "doberman" cut, make sure it was short enough but not too short. They did a beautiful job on the male pup's tail, but the female's tail looked just like a doberman tail. She ended up being sold on a limited registration anyway after the owner of the stud dog evaluated her at 7 weeks (not show quality), so in the end, it didn't matter about her tail. :)

Personally, I hated the idea of it, and the only reason I did it was because I thought no one would want the puppies undocked.

Re: Tail Docking

I dont understand the need of docking a tail other then "looks" or just plain ol' vain people.Anybody with rottie knowledge knows why there was a need for docking tails way back in Germany and Romania. There is absolutly no need for docking the breed now.Unless your a cow/sheep herder in the mountains with your working rottie. Why does it continue to be done?

Re: Tail Docking

Maybe its just me but I thought it was common to see Rottweilers with there tails docked until I saw some pictures online of those who have websites that breed. Our boy was done @ 3 days old we were told and they seemed to have done a good job. Not that it would matter. We were smitten already when we saw him.
