more on overbite Hi All! We just brought home our gorgeous little female rottie. She has what the breeder called a "medium" overbite. My question is this: The overbite has pulled the top canine teeth out to where the bottom canine tooth (left side) is hitting the roof of the of the mouth and making a hole just inside the socket to the top canine tooth. The breeder told me, as messages in this forum confirm, that overbites usually do correct and in time, the correction will allow the bottom canine teeth to fit into their proper space. The breeder told me that our vet may have to break the bottom tooth off. Is this breaking the tooth off common and should I be alarmed that the bottom tooth is making an indention in the roof of the mouth? Thanks!

Bill, are you planning on showing your puppy? If you are DON"T have any teeth pulled. In the breed ring the judge will count teeth. The standard calls for "teeth 42 in number (20 upper,22 lower),strong correctly placed, meeting in a scissors bite-lower incisors touching inside of upper incisors." Serious faults Level bite, any missing teeth. Disqualification Overshot, undershot(when incisors do not touch or mesh); markedly wry mouth;2 or more missing teeth. Have your vet examine the teeth and jaw. We had a pup born here years who had a "bad bite" from the start, not only was the bite off, the jaw was not in proper linement! the dog became a good "pet". Let us know what your vet thinks about the bite. Good luck!

She will start loosing her puppy teeth about 3 months old. You can start making that tooth loose now by just wiggling it alot. There are no roots just like a child so you are not gonna hurt her. Some overbites correct but untill her permint (ms) teeth come in (5 to 6 months old) you are not gonna know how the bite is gonna be.I would not like the fact that the bottom tooth is making a small hole in the roof of her mouth tho. I would ask your vet what can be done about that. I am thinking food could get up there & maybe cause a infection or something! ------------------

If the lower canines are hitting the hard palate you can have these puppy teeth pulled. If this problems persists when she has her adult teeth, the lower canines can be cut back so they don't hit the hard palate. They shouldn't have to be pulled. I've known people with dogs that had this severe an overbite and none of them had to have the lower canines pulled. Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo1@apex2000.net
