| Purchasing a pup
Last week I had to put my 10 1/2 year old female to sleep due to very bad HD. I miss Douska very much. I know she is out of pain now and hopfully, she's still looking over me. I will never be able to replace her, but I feel empty without her. So, I have begun my search for a new female pup. I have called several breeders and have received information packets from them. I have a few question about the pedigrees on the dogs , They appear to have some very excellent dogs in the lines. Of a total of a 126 dogs only 21 do not have some type of title . The sire of the litter is Jenecks Quinn II he is a Jenecks Wontan son and his dam is Jenecks Bessy. The dam of the litter is Sonja VH Falconsnest her sire is Graf VD Teufelsbrucke and her dam is Dina VD Schwarzen Heide. It is indicated in the info I recieved that Quinn is 11% line bred on some of the best known and producing Rottweilers of all time, Nero Vom Schloss Rietheim and Ives Eulenspiegal. Since I have very little or no experience in reading pedigrees or breeding, I would like to know what 11% line bred means. I have read several books on purchasing a pup, and they indicate that you should make a list of conformation titles, working titles and a bunch of other things. With these pedigrees it appears to me that their are plently of titles on both sides. I feel that temperment is the most important but if all this dogs have the titles they would have the temperment also, correct ? . What do I need to look at next? Thanks!! |

| This data can overload you. I will try to explain how you would come up with precentage numbers. Sire and Dam 50% x2, Grandsires and Granddams 25% x4, GreatGrand 12.5% x8, GreatGreatGrands 6.25% x16 and so on. A dog can be on both the bottom and top several times and end up with high precentage number such as Ives but he is so far back he really has no influence. Now the question is what do you want to do with you puppy show, Obedience or just a quality pet. Look and see how the Sire, Dam, and Grand Sires and Dams did in that field. I can say this about the lines that you are looking at; they have a good history of producing quality dogs. But not all puppies produced from these or any lines for that matter are all show puppies, or working puppies. Buying puppies from these lines will cost a couple of pennies. Ask for a 4 generation breeding report and forget the 7 or 8 generation reports. Those are great for breeders but can mislead the casual buyer. This lines produce dogs with sound temperments, but I would test the puppy before buying. I would plan to make a trip just to test the dog, knowing that on that day I will only test him. No matter what I would not buy the dog on that day. And I would check more than one litter, quality shows itself. Good Luck. |

| that breeding would be an outcross for if dogs are more then 4 gen back they rely have lital influence if you wish to see a tight line breeding see what i did and orval no the cost for a good or well bred dog should not cost alot alot of good breediers dont charge over a decent rate for i dont care what lines the dogs come from how mutch the person paid for the mother or the father that the pupy buyer should payfor it so what ever it cost me to breed the dogs are a hoby to me one question you should ask is how many liters they have had for the year how long they have bin into the shows or sh yes titalys they receved then ask the akc ckc .. ukc i have no respect for on how many liters they reg for the year. does not infulence the price of my pups to me paying more then 1500 for a pup is just to mutch for you never no what that pup will tern out to be and chip ask the reg questions and see if the breedier is onest to you for you should be able to comunicat with the breeder for any problams with the dog in the futer and trust your jugment to like i hope to have a good exchange with my pupy buyers and tell them that they can call me any time to ask me questions i want that and like it to [This message has been edited by Alison (edited January 30, 1999).] [This message has been edited by Alison (edited January 30, 1999).] |

| Chip, as the folks before me stated-it can be very confusing to the average puppy buyer about linebreeding percentages. Remember-linebreeding will make the good better (hopefully) and the bad-worse. It is true, that beyond the first few generations, these dogs have very little effect on this generation. Also, titles can be very confusing-find out what country or club awarded these titles. Also, how many times has this dog been bred vs. CH.(insert whatever titles you wish) he has produced. I won't even begin to get into genetics, but if you have any specific questions about a breeding I will try to answer you. I myself have dogs that are linebred on Ives. He tends to throw tight fronts among other things. Also, as stated before, figure out what it is exactly that you want in a puppy-show, working, pet, etc. Be aware about the hardness or drive in particular dogs also. In the breeding I will be doing later this year it is a Ives, Dasko cross, so I have done a lot of research on this line. If there is anything I can help you with please let me know. Good Luck |
