Deep sockets and good fitting joints are not the only aspects studied. They also study to see if any changes have occured. This would appear in such slight degrees that only trained eyes can notice. The problem is sometimes the quality of the Xray causes doubt. That is why OFA allows and suggest resubmittals. Most Vets do not have the best equipment, and their xrays are often lacking. The best Vets to do these types of Xrays are orthopedic surgens, typicaly their equipment can produce a much more detailed xray.

Readers for OFA do take into account the age of the dog when evaluating x-rays. I've known of quite a few dogs ratings to be upgraded when x-rays were re-submitted to OFA (either a new x-ray or a re-submission of the original x-ray).

I have resubmitted x-rays on two different dogs. The first was originally rated fair, I had new x-rays submitted and the rating came back good. The second was originally rated mildly dysplastic. New x-rays, good rating. I think it is extremely important to use a vet that is very familiar with OFA requirements and gets the positioning right.

Maybe we should send x-rays in three times and take two out of three either way?I heard the same on re-takes many times come back good. The vet it seems to me has to make sure everything is positioned correctly also. They will love my idea more money for the higher ups!

If you do send in a second x-ray.... and it comes back with a worse rating than before... does the new one count or will they stick with the better one from before?

I have a dog that is five years old and i would like to take him to make his hip test.
My question is if at this age he could receive a worse qualification than he would have received younger,or the age does not really matter for the test

Butch, The first one there was only a difference of about two months. The second was x-rayed at twenty six months the first time, I then got her back because of the rating, she came in season and we finally re-xrayed at thirtyfour months.
I don'think age should make a difference, my understanding is that the x-rays are compared to x-rays of dogs the same age.

The age will effect the rating the same as the difference in his hips between the age of 2 and 5. If your dog's hips changes were very, very slight then the rating should be the same. However if your dog's hips changed to any degree then it would change the rating.

I have brought in Imports that I have had Xrayed 4 and 5 years of age. They recieved the exact same rating they had at the age of 18 months in Europe. The theory is the hips should rate the same, but outside factors to come into play such as trama. This is a case by case situation. I do believe that 85% of dogs would rate the same.
