Hi Tia, Does your male have any working or show titles? Are you going to test his elbows, eyes, heart? Why are you breeding him? Is he a excellent example of the breed? Sorry just have to ask cause there are so many rescue rotts out there.

Thankyou for replying to my question. He holds no titles, we haven't had the elbows/eyes/heart tested yet. I had no iddea that those were necessary to check too.... I may be totally biased but I think he's a beautiful rott. We have had many compliments on him. I'm sorry but I am not familiar with the term "rescue rott". We thought he would sire some nice pups, and we considered the possibility of adding one of his children to our home as well. If we want to stud him does he have to have titles? And could you tell me the names of the tests for eyes and heart so that I might ask our Vet do do them? Thankyou again.

A 'rescued Rottweiler' is one no one wants anymore. It has been given up because it's owner who initially thought it was cool to have a Rottweiler doesn't want to deal with the dog. Or because it got too big. Or because they got tired of feeding it. Some of them are taken to the animal shelter, some are just dumped in the country or in the streets. Many rescued Rotties have been saved from abusive owners. www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/7900/rottietails.html This page has stories about several abandoned/abused Rotts who got lucky. If you are considering breeding, please read these stories. If you aren't really picky about who gets your babies, they could end up just like these Rotts or maybe even worse! ------------------ Rachel aka rottie_mama http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/7900

I need info on South Carolina breeders My husband and I are interested in breeding our male. We have acquired OFA cert. and had bursilosis(sic) test run. How can I find breeders seeking Rotts in our area? I have contacted our Vet and other local Vets and am on their Stud lists. But I would like to learn how to get this rolling myself? Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself..? Thankyou for any assistance!

Hi Tia, Ok the reason I mentioned rescue rotties is because I wanted to know if you are willing to take the responsibility for all the pups that are born and follow up on them for the rest of their life. To me breeding is a HUGE committment and not something to go into lightly. There are just to many abandoned rotties out there that started out when people bred the parents and didn't think about what would happen to these young lives they brought into the world. As far as other test the eyes and the heart are CERF tests, the elbows are done with xrays. All these results are sent into OFA. You IMO will never find a responsible rottie owner who will breed to your stud unless you have all health clearances and working/showing titles. Of course you will find a backyard breeder that will bred to your boy, but then are you willing to take the responsibility of all the pups born?????? Think about this very seriously Tia it is not a venture to take lightly! ------------------ Donna Holloway www.telusplanet.net/public/donnah/HOME.HTM

I strongly believe you must not breed.

Tia: Don't breed your male. The fact that you didn't know he needs titles, that you haven't had his elbows/eyes/heart tested, that you have no idea what a "rescue Rottie" is says that you have boatloads to learn. You and your husband are in absolutely no position to even entertain the thought of breeding because you don't know enough. People such as yourselves who engage in breeding are liabilities to the breed. Really, what do the people who stop you on the street to compliment you on how handsome your male really know?? Probably as much as you--which isn't enough. After all, you yourself just told us that you didn't know your dog needs titles and that didn't know it's necessary to have your dog examined for soundness. A case of the blind leading the halt. If you spend time on this Forum and read the thoughtful comments posted by the thoroughly experienced Rottie people, you'll realize that breeding is a huge responsibility and that it's not something done lightly. I've had Rotties for about 14 years. Never, in a million years, would I consider breeding. The responsibility is just too overwhelming. And if somebody stopped me on the street to tell me how good-looking my Rottie was and was I interested in breeding? I could't get away from that person fast enough. If all that person said was that I had a good-looking dog, I'd know the person was for too ignorgant. Our latest Rottie family member is a rescue puppy--it could very well be that somebody like yourself who had a bitch or a dog that "everyone thought was just beautiful" foolishly bred their dog. Who knows what happened to Tula's brothers and sisters? North East Rottweiler Rescue & Referral is the closest Rottie rescue to us. Check out their site (http://www.rottrescue.org/rescuelist.html). And then do a search and check out all the other Rottie rescue groups all over the US and Canada. Take a very hard look at all those Rotties--some of them very nice looking dogs--who are in desperate need of loving, caring, understanding homes.

Thank you all for your valuable information. Everyone has given me ALOT to think about. In considering all of the input, could anyone suggest someone to evaluate our dog's ability/inability to be a worthwhile stud. Thankyou all again.

| On the downside to breeding... I am meeting some people this weekend who are returning a show quality male I sold them 5 years ago. The dog has been spoiled; the husband is now often out of town; the dog is getting pushy with the wife and she's scared of him. So, I get the dog back and will need to find another home for him as I already have one of his brothers and I don't think they are going to like each other http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/frown.gif . There are times the breeder will not take responsibility for puppies and the stud owner needs to step in and take over. It's not easy to place a 5-year-old male that is a bully and pushy. | Thank you Baren. Interestingly enough, the male I already have is a littermate to the one I'm getting back. He was also returned to me. Originally sold to a person with impeccable references, long background in dogs, obedience, blah, blah, blah. After I got the dog back I found out he'd probably been crated something like 20-23 hours a day; been bullied by an older Belgian Sheepdog; etc. This was a top obedience prospect and also could have been a good SchH dog. He's now being shown in conformation and has a Best in Show from the classes in Canada & was # 5 Rott in Canada for 1998. However, I MIGHT be able to get a CD on him but he has problems with separation anxiety because of his background. So I won't even think of trying for a CDX. He's an escape artist & has to be kept in a chain link, covered run when I'm not home. He will dig under fences and break out of crates. Unfortunate legacy of a bad first home http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/frown.gif. And a couple of the people who gave references for this owner have since apologized as she had them fooled too.... | Thankyou O, I wil need more info on the location of the show in Hilton Head. And our Breeder is in Florida. We bought him when we lived down there. Since we have moved here, I didn't think she'd have any info for me. |
