OMG! I can't stop crying. I agree this should be made into a sticky. Need to go compose myself now.

Thank you for taking the time to write this. It was very moving and brought back a lot of memories.

One of the best pieces of advice that I ever received was 13 years ago. I had just purchased a show prospect bitch who was destined to do some winning. The advice came from a long time breeder (in another breed) and was simply "Before you breed your first litter, please volunteer just one month at the local Humane Society". I gave it a year. What I saw there broke my heart but also set the tone for the breeder I would become. Even now, I pull out the journal that I kept during my time there and re-read my notes prior to letting each litter go home. It's torn and tattered, but has stuck with me all these years, and through all these litters.

There are always going to be dog breeders, without them, we wouldn't have purbred dogs. So I'd never say that no one should breed their dogs. However, I would stronly advise that anyone who is considering it, first donate their time to their local SPCA or Rottweiler Rescue. It's easy to say "I"ll be a good breeder and my dogs would never end up there" until you see how many actually do.

Actually, we DO have that posted on the door at the local shelter. A friend of mine does hand lettered invitations and the like, amazingly talented guy...and he did a beautiful poster for the shelter.

Luckily, the local shelter busts their butts to get the dogs ready for adoption....and while at the shelter they are socialized, walked, well fed, well cared for, very very lucky dogs...although intake is often less than 10 per month, which is fine with us!

Cool

This is a well written article.
The problem is that most people that breed their dogs think that the puppies they have produced will never end up in a shelter or tied to a tree on a chain.
We have read here many times people that have produced a litter and have good homes for them all..their mother, father, brother, sister, uncle,etc....all want one of their pups. But soon after adoption or sale...the excuses start coming...moving, divorcing, allergies, dog too big, dog too destructive, noisey, hairy, dirty, etc.

We are preaching to the choir here...but hopefully some of the people reading these forums through the years have changed their minds about breeding their "nice dogs".

You have my vote for a sticky.

I go to work at Banfield, at two, today. I will not be able to hold back if someone in Petsmart starts as to how they only want to breed their dog just one time since it is AKC registered. Maybe I should print this and hand it out to the stupid people in the world. The story is so sad, and only one of many. Makes me ashamed to be called human.

Definately needs to be a sticky. If you don't have some reaction to this story, you're as cold as ice! I know I had to wipe away a few dewy spots that appeared on my cheek....

Geez, we just had this conversation at lunch again. Talking about breeding labs - these poor dogs have to be the most irresponsibly bred animal in the world. I mentioned a woman at classes whose yellow lab just had pups. Guy asks me what color they were. Well, duh, yellow. He says "all of them?" Well, yea. He says his dog's mother was yellow and the father brown (ahhhhh!!!) and all the pups were black. AAHHHHHHH!!!......Heaven Help Me!!!! I mentioned the humane society volunteer work to deter breeding as another woman at the table had friends who just bred their AKC lab once to get another pup and sold the rest. ($125 to $200 all these precious gems are going for - ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!)..

LAbs are definatly overbred Iwas at the shelter and it seems like half of the dogs if not more are Labs. I saw this story and I bawled at work Thank God I am in a secluded corner I just felt the need to share it. Hopefully all the people that have been asking about breeding will reconsider.

I vote for sticky too.

Brought back memories of my time at the local HS.

I had prepared myself for the euthanasia observation as best I could. I bit my lip and held my tears until I saw "The refrigeration room". That's when the tears came and my stomach felt like I had just swallowed a big rock.
Over a dozen 55 gallon barrels full to overflowing with bodies. Just one week's worth.
