Contracts

I have a question about breeder/seller contracts. I am NOT breeding but I have seen so many different contracts, that I am curious. Can anyone give me an example of what they use when breeding/selling pups? The reason I am so interested is that I have my own opinions yet am not a breeder and I am just curious as to if I am on key or not when trying to explain to others that would be byb. Please keep in mind, I discourage byb at all costs and am horrified at those that do. I am not looking for a flame here, just curious.
Thanks, Liss

Re: Contracts

Here's an good website that goes through how to find a responsible breeder.
Finding a Responsible Breeder

I think its most important that the breeder and new owner feel so comfortable with their decisions on placement that the contract itself is just a formality (they've discussed and come to agreements on all the points in the contract already). Contracts generally cover things like genetic health issues, training/care requirements, showing/trialing recommendations or requirements for puppies sold as show or working potential, basically the breeders responsibilities and new owners responsibilities. After that point its personal...depending on where priorities lie for both the breeder and new owner (everyone is an individual after all).

Re: Contracts

BYBs don't usually have contracts or if they do, they simply offer a replacement if the dog is returned, and from another BYB breeding, counting on the fact that few want to relinquish the dog they have.

Sharon, I for some reason, am not allowed to send private messages. Or maybe I am doing something wrong, I dont know. I posted my email in your guestbook on your homepage though, Im looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks a bunch!!! Liss

Judi,
Thanks for the info. I guess Im not too far off when I tell people about byb, I was just curious as to what some different contracts really look like, at this point, I only have my boy and his contract was pretty straight forward, I just thought I would compare.

Re: Contracts

There are a whole lot of sample puppy contracts on the web. Just do search on puppy contract. After reading a few you can see some similarities and some differences. Contracts are only as good as the people enforcing them.
