| Finding out hereditary information... We have a five month old rottie and I would like to find out more information about his parents...is there any way to do this. We got him from a family who could not care for him, therefore we did not have a realtionship with the breeder...the family told us very little and really were not interested in this sort of thing, however, I really am curious about his parents.....any suggestions? I have papers, which of course tells you next to nothing...has anyone ever ordered the pedigree from these organizations? If so, does it provide much information? |

| Re: Finding out hereditary information... The papers should have the parents names on them. The pedigree will just tell you who they are and thier #'s. Sometimes they will have titles on it as well. If you know the parents names you could try the site paw village and see if it is listed on there. From there you can research the ancestors and find out all kinds of good information. |

| Re: Finding out hereditary information... Thank you for your thoughts....I did not find his parents on there....so the pedigree will not give you much information either? Do you think I could call the breeder, or would that be weird? |

| Re: Finding out hereditary information... What do you mean by "papers"? The term "papers" usually means registration papers, which contains the pedigree as well as registration information. If you know the breeder's name, by all means call them, although I do wonder what kind of breeder it is if the family you got the dog from didn't just return the dog to the breeder (Code of Ethics breeders should take any dog they breed back at any time for any reason, many state specifically in their contract that if the original owner cannot keep the dog, that the dog must be returned to the breeder rather than rehomed by the owner).

| Re: Finding out hereditary information... Yes, just registration papers, which does have the parents name on it, but is that all that I can get? Really...I never heard of that? Actually in the contract that had x amount of days to return the dog...but I dont think there was a provision for having to return the dog if the owner did not want to keep it. This doesnt sound good, however, it looks like on his paper that there was a breeder and then after 8 weeks, was transferred to a dog farm (I know what you are thinking) then after a week, was bought by this family, who had him for about a month. |

| Re: Finding out hereditary information... What club is the dog registered with? If the dog is registered with the AKC (or other reputable registering body, like UKC, C(anadian)KC or others, depending on where you live), and the dog's registration has been transferred to you, then I believe you can contact the registering club and get a copy of the dog's pedigree (although the breeder should also be able to provide this to you). But I agree with you, it doesn't sound good.

| Re: Finding out hereditary information... See here. The pedigree can give you names of ancestors (I'm not sure how many generations a standard AKC pedigree gives you, but with most clubs it's four or five), health test scores, titles, etc. If health tests were not done, or not reported, they will not show up on the pedigree.

| Re: Finding out hereditary information... If you will go to the OFA database, use their search feature and put in the AKC registration numbers of the parents you will (if they have health clearances) get a wealth of information not only on them but all their relatives. Of course if they never had health issues registered, you will not find them there |

| Is the "breeder" Kimbertal Kennels??? If not...there is no need to give us the name of the breeder...but what are your pup's sire and dams names? There maybe someone here that recognises the lines that your pup comes from. I agree with the others...COE breeders do not let you just pass on your pup to who ever wants it...they want to keep track of their dogs for the dogs life. Also you can go to www.offa.org and put in the sire and dam's name and see if they or any of their siblings or family had had their hip or elbows certified. Gina

If you feel comfortable, please list the parents names. If not, that's fine! We are SLEUTHS in Rottie owner clothing! We love to sniff out information for others! It's how we (or at least I) feel better about our breed! There is a NUMBER of things that can be found out just by knowing the parents. BUT, no matter what kind of start your guy HAD.......feel better knowing that he's on the right path now with an owner that CARES enough to come here for information!
