OFA results are in

The stress the last two weeks was unbelievable but its finally over. In the mail today, was an oversized white envelope with the letters O-F-A on it. I slowly and very nervously opened said envelope, removed the contents, opened my eyes and read the results of:

Elbows-Normal
Hips-EXCELLENT!!!!

Its now official. All health clearances are done and Eli (SG rated, UCH Sunburst's Hard Habit To Break, CGC, TDI, Blood Donor) now qualifies for the CHIC Program database.

He is now listed as:
CERF eyes clear
Cardiac Clear
Elbows Normal
Patellas Normal
Hips Excellent
PennHIP profiled

He's also a UKC Champion with 2 of 5 required Grand Champion points and he has 3 AKC points, a BOB win, BOS win, and multiple Reserve wins. Thank you Debi for such an awesome boy!

Excellent! Getting the results back even if you think you know everything is ok, is still a HUGE relief!!

Thanks everyone! LOL I'm breathing...barely, but I'm breathing. Everything has gone so smoothly for us so far, I can't believe my fortune. I just had "that feeling" in the pit of my stomach that the hips/elbows would be our downfall. I'm SOOOOO glad I was wrong! Eli has been such a joy to me and we're having so much fun together. Now all that is left is finishing his AKC Championship and then we start on those working titles.

Re: OFA results are in

Congrats on the Excellent.

Regarding the CHIC, you need a Thyroid cert and I don't see that in your list. Did you forget it, or not do it?

Froli had her CHIC: Cardiac, Thyroid, CERF, hips, elbows.

Re: OFA results are in

Sorry to jump in here, but you don't need a thyroid number...just Hips/Elbows/Heart/CERF (and they don't have to pass, just have to be sent in...so a CHIC just means they were checked, but they could have failed).

Elsa & Roca both have their CHIC numbers without OFA Thyroid (ran full thyroid, but it wasn't sent to the official lab), and Arnie has his with OFA Thyroid.

Congrats on the good news anyway!

Re: OFA results are in

Ok, thanks!! I thought the Thyroid was required. I knew they didn't have to pass. Frol's initial thyroid was not drawn after fasting (didn't know any better) and she received an Equivocal rating from OFA. I then re-ran her using the local lab (instead of Cornell$$$$) and when drawn appropriately, her levels were fine. Just had the Grrrlz done, waiting for numbers from Michigan.

Thank you!

Nope, I didn't forget it, and nope, its not a required test for CHIC. Eli is a blood donor and thyroid is one of the things they test for on the preliminary screenings for new donors. He's clear for both thyroid and brucellosis. They test for brucellosis every year on an intact donor. IF anyone expresses interest in using him for stud, THEN I'll certify him through Michigan and OFA for thyroid. Brucellosis I'll test for close to any breeding since the blood donor program only tests once a year.

I sent mine Express Mail. They were supposed to get there the next day by 3:00pm. They didn't get there till Monday (mailed them on a Thursday) afternoon. So not only did OFA get my films FAST, I got them there for FREE since it was guaranteed delivery. Gotta love the USPS....I paid $13 to send them Express Mail, they refunded my money since they did not deliver by the guaranteed time and date. Just an FYI for future use.

Hey Majicka! Love those pics of the new guy by the way.
Eli donates blood just like humans do, with the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank. Its a great program and it helps sooo many dogs get through traumas, surgeries, and other illnesses that require a full blood or blood component transfusion. And the best thing, you don't have to be a pure bred to participate. As long as the dog meets weight and age requirements, is healthy and passes the screening tests they qualify. I have started the Pit mix rescue with the program and he did great.

Thank you again for the frontline!!
