Re: white spots on the chest

Yes, quite frequently puppies will be born and have a small spot of white on their chest. When I say small, I mean the size of a quarter or smaller. It does not grow with the dog, it gets smaller as they grow and normally goes away.

Unless you are planning on showing your dog in the breed ring, there is no need for concern. If you are going to show your dog, then hopefully it will disappear by the time he/she is ready to show. You will not want to take your dog into the ring with white on it's chest, it is a disqualifying fault.

How old is your dog? DO you plan on showing him/her? How big is the spot?

This is not correct. From the AKC standard:
Serious Faults--Straw-colored, excessive, insufficient or sooty markings; rust marking other than described above; white marking any place on dog (a few rust or white hairs do not constitute a marking).

My boy has maybe half a dozen white hairs on his chest. You have to hunt for them. His uncle had a white blaze and was shown and did very well. He was even V rated as an adult in USRC shows (one was a V-1 I believe). The white was not covered up.
I do agree that having white is certainly not desired and any breeding partners should be carefully selected to ensure that trait isn't being doubled up on.

Re: white spots on the chest

Oops sorry! I did know that it is just a serious fault! Sorry for the mis-information. And when I said you would not want to take one in the ring with white, I was talking about a large amount of white, not just a few hairs. :p

Thanks for clarifying this for him.

The white, if small, generally does disappear. White is not a disqualification, it is a serious fault and I have seen dogs shown with noticible white on the chest and they have at least placed. Not that I am condoning showing a dog with white.

Re: white spots on the chest

I was told by someone who has bred Rotties for 10 years that if the puppy has a different pigment color on his skin that the white hairs grow out of, it's permanent, a marking. If there is no pigment change the hairs will most likely fall out and not grow back.
