ACL problem, Patella Luxation and the Breeder she came from

Hi everyone. Haven't been on this board in a while.
I have a 26 month old female Rott. She's wonderful!

Only problem is that I have problems again with her hind leg.
I operated on her last summer for a deformed tibia. Had it corrected. Went well. Now, she has another problem with
Patella luxation and i believe an ACL partial tearing.

I'm wondering if this is genetic. Mostly the tibia deformaty and she also has hip dysplasure.

What I'd like to know is there is anyone out there that has one of her siblings and if there are problems with those dogs. For now i can narrow it down to a general area where I got her from and would communicate with you thru email.

She is from long island (suffolk county) (Islip) New York on the south shore. I did get her from a breeder.

Thank you.

This thread will be moved out of Behaviour.
Sorry you are having health probems with your dog.:(

There are "breeders" and then there are BREEDERS....just because you think that you got her from a "breeder" does not make yours a good breeder.

You should be reporting to your breeder about all of the health problems that your dogs has. If they were good breeders they would be helping you.
What are the OFA certification numbers on the sire and the dam of your dog? This is a good way to start. Go to www.ofa.com
and put in the numbers that should be found on your pedigree.

What type of guarantee did you have when you purchased her?
What contract did you sign?

Gina

To Diesel's Mom, could you communicate with me on email perhaps and tell me who your breeder is. Please send me an email address if you'd like.

As for the OFA cert. The story is..... The Sire is Cert. at a "F".
The breeder told me that the Dam was never checked because she was overseas for training and when she returned to the states she went into heat.

Looking at her Pedigree Papers, there are some in her lineage that have Excellent him ratings.

I don't believe that the breeder is a "backyard" breeder. He has some impressive website. But, that's how I found him. He does not belong to any rottweiler organization thou. Alot of people know of him. Diesel's mom, I wonder if you know of him. Please respond.

When I spoke to the breeder initially of the Tibia operation and they hip dysplasure and that we wanted some help from him, his response was "give me the pup back and I'll give you the money back". I paid $800 for my Rott. I have since paid about $5000 for her surgery and recently doctor's visits for her Patella Luxation problem.

Anyone these days can make an impressive website. I would not use that as a basis for deciding whether or not he is a BYB. I'm not saying that he is, but an impressive website means squat. Check out Kimbertal's website. It's pretty impressive, but if you do a search for "Kimbertal" in these forums you'll find that they're NOT good breeders.

He sounds like a "fancy BYB breeder" to me. If he is breeding dogs with a F and not bothering to even have the dam's hips checked. Also warning bells should be ringing if they do not belong to any clubs.
Does this breeder show or work his dogs? Were the sire and/or dame titled at all??

I am in the search for a puppy....and am amazed at all of the great web pages that breeders have. When you really start looking though...when there are no OFA numbers or CERF #'s or there is no mention of temperment ...you know that these are not COE breeders.

Lindak,

Just because a dog wins at shows doesn't mean it's healthy or worth breeding from....

Please be aware that things like VP2, SG1, V2 etc are not titles, merely ratings / gradings that are standard issue at some shows.

Yes it is true that the V ratings are only ratings... however the multiple Seiger titles do have some merit... that being said just because the dog has some merit doesn't make the breeder an ethical one.... There are many glorified BYB's out there that have dogs with V ratings, AKC,UCI,UKC and Int'l championships, Sch titles etc... a list of titles, ratings and acomplishments doesn't neccesarily mean ethical either.
