Breeding

At the risk of staring something here, I have a question. About 5 years ago, I had a beautiful rott named Baby Doll. We got her at six weeks old, she grew up with my children climbing all over her, had the sweetest personality I have ever seen in any dog before. We ended up giving her away, (to the meter reader of all people, would stay in the yard 15-20 min playing with her each month) because we were moving to a new neighborhood. We can't have fences here and we were afraid that some parents might freak and shoot her (they are intimidating looking!). Anyway, the point is, I want another one. I also want to possibly start breeding them as carreer, but I want to do it right. How do I go about getting started? I have got so much good info off of here that I thought I would post.I'm done now!:D

Do you also want to show them in various different arenas? For example, conformation, obedience, tracking, carting, agility, bite work, etc.

Are you still living in a house with no fenced yard?

There are lots of people on the forum who breed. They will tell you that it is not for the faint of heart. It is a lifelong commitment to the puppies.

Do lots of research. Don't plan on being able to breed your first dog. Go to lots of shows and meet lots of people.

I think some of the things you mentioned in your post will make many people wary of you pursuing a "career" as a breeder. The last thing this breed needs is more breeders trying to make money of them. I think you may want to reconsider.

Find a good, ethical breeder who is willing to mentor you. Follow him/her around to shows, be the assistant. Be a sponge and soak up every bit of information you can. Maybe in a few years you'll have a dog you've titled in performance and conformation who's worth breeding. Breeding isn't a "career" unless you run a puppy mill - yes, it's possible to make a bit more money than you spend breeding, but it's not something to regard as a money-making venture, or as a second income. If you want to breed ethically, you breed when and if you have a dog worth breeding, whose genes will better the breed, when you can afford to care for her properly, when you can afford to screen possible owners carefully, when you can afford to keep each puppy until the end of its life if necessary. Getting rid of a dog because you were worried about your neighbours shooting it (rather than just ensuring that it was never outside alone) isn't a good start, but everyone can change. Good luck to you.

reply, no worries

I am only considering this because I love Rotts. I am not looking for a get rich quick scheme. Baby wouldn't have been the awsome dog that she was if it weren't for the love and attention we gave her. I have seen Rotts that were not taken care of and it broke my heart. This is not something I want to jump into either. I would love to find a mentor, learn everything. We are fixing to build another home on about 30 acres. It isn't until our home is complete and we have adequate space for such a thing that I would ever consider starting this venture. I just want to know what I can do to get ready. If any of you know anyone in South Mississippi that could take me under their wing and show me the ropes, I feel that would be a great start.:)

If you go to the AKC website, you can find out about dog shows in your area. That is a good place to start looking.

I, like many, get asked the same question frequently. (I want to breed dogs. How do I go about breeding my female? Or, some variation of this.)

My answer is always the same:

You have to know the answers to your own questions long before you ever put two dogs together and that takes time.

So, if you are truly interested, keep asking, keep learning. You'll find many people willing to help you but you have to be willing to put in the time.

Patience. ;)

Stated beautifully! I think this applies to many things, not just breeding. Id say if you are just thinking about getting started now, you got a good 5+ years of learning to go :)

If you loved this dog so much and now want to breed Rottweilers, why did you give her away? To the meter man? Did you take your children when you moved?

Breeding Rottweilers is a life time commitment, it is not until it becomes inconvenient. I consider myself a breeder, living in my home right now are five dogs, an eight year old who is severely dysplastic and has been here since she was 12 weeks, an almost ten year old who is in great health and occassionally used as a stud dog, a seven year old almost finished, two litters, both disasters so she is now spayed. a two year old returned to me, hips won't OFA looking for a pet/obedience home, an almost four year old male who needs to be top dog somewhere. however I bred him and raised him from a puppy, he has a CD and is pointed. It would be more convienent to place him, but until I find the perfect home he is here. Do I need all these dogs for breeding? NO!! Will I fullfill my responsibility to them, YES!! And if you plan to breed that is what you must be ready to do. Will you make money? NO!! Can you consider it a career? Only if a non-profit career is what you have in mind!!!

You can make a ton of money breeding them.

Imagine 10-13 puppies every 3 months at $1000-$2000 a pop.

Thats alot of tax free cash!

:)

And it isn't much work because you just let the Mommy Rotty take care of them for 8 weeks, then sell them.

I am going to assume that, just like in the "Brother for Simba" thread, you are being sarcastic. May I make the suggestion to use the icon instead of a smiley face so that those posters who are not familiar with your style of humor/sarcasm will not misread the intended meaning of your post?

Just trying to save some of the members who post in this forum from having heart palpitations at the thought of having to deal with yet another BYB.

Sorry Phoenix ... :)

I was thinking the same thing as I posted, and it occurred to me that some Ninny might actually see these dollar signs and strive towards BYB riches.

RedKimmey - take the advice of the knowledgable people here and DO NOT BREED.
