Good Registry

I've been reading a lot of stuff about how registries don't necessarily mean much as they can easily be cheated/fooled/bought off or just don't care as long as they get the money for registering the dog/litter, and I am just kind of wondering:

Is there a registry somewhere out there that doesn't register dogs for puppy millers and BYBs and such? I guess what I am asking is whether there is a registry that actually means something as to the good breeding of the dog.

Pure curiosity, but any info would be appreciated.

Sadly, no. There's no way to police it. How would an organization from Michigan be able to verify the parents / conditions / quality of a dog in Texas?

Simply put, registration is a requirement - but it's simply only the FIRST step in a long line of requirements. ;)

OK. That's kind of disapointing, but not unexpected. Like I said, it was just curiosity. I have no plans to breed, show, or even own a registered dog anytime in the future. CGC is the loftiest expectation (but not possibility), so it's rescues and pound puppies for me. Unless I someday get the pharaoh hound of my dreams, you don't find them in pounds or rescues so I guess I would have to go to a breeder...

You can get an ILP registration from AKC if your dog appears to be a Rottweiler. With the ILP you can show in obedience, get your CGC(you can get a CGC even with a mixed breed) and show in other venues, everything but confirmation.

AKC does make an effort to close down puppymills by requiring DNA testing.

Georg,

BYB is short for Back Yard Breeder.

I hope this helps.

Wookies Mom,

If you are interested in working your dog past the CGC there are lots of mixed dog clubs that show purebreds that cant be shown AKC. The main requirement of most is that the dog is fixed.

Very true, the United Kennel Club registers purebreds (many of which are not AKC recognized breeds, like mine) and offers a a Limited Privilege registration for altered purebred and mixed breed dogs - they're also fairly stringent in the way they register unaltered purebreds (unlike that other kennel club mentioned here a few days ago, which seemed to be designed for puppy mills). UKC doesn't allow professional handlers at their shows (which by no means makes the shows less competitive, just a bit less daunting for people new to the sport). I've been to a few (and will hopefully be showing in an unlicensed class (classes with no points, meant to provide an opportunity for experience) at a show later this month).

Thanks for all of the replies. I am not really interested in showing, but am going to work at some stuff (maybe tracking and agility). If Wookie shows inerest and ability I might look into getting her a ILP to compete, but my question was just plain curiosity as to whether there is a good registry out there. It's kind of sad that there isn't.
