Who's Your Daddy??

I took my pup to a breeder so she could critique my pup to see if he is show worthy. (She's got some wonderful dogs so I trust her judgement). Well she was conducting a planned breeding. As she is critiquing Nero in the front yard what was going on in her back yard was another of her males whos not nearly as nice or as proven as the one who she's waited on, has climbed his kennel fence and got a tie with her female. This all happened in a span of perhaps a minute...
How is she going to know the sire to the pups that are coming in a couple months?

DNA!

They can be DNA Tested! Of course, the sire and dam will also have to be tested. But the results will be 99.9% accurate. As long as both parents are registered (as found by the DNA results), the pups will be able to be registered.

Hmmm - I'd be rethinking my mentor maybe if I were you....I know that accidents CAN happen....but it seems to me that an extrememly responsible breeder would have a more secure kennel system so this wouldn't happen. JMO of course...

I have to agree, I would be looking for another mentor if I were you. This is not the example you want to follow.

As I've stated in other threads, I know of a couple of breeders that had 'whoops' moments. Both of them were honest mistakes / accidents and changes were made so that they wouldn't occur again.

No one is perfect. I personally would judge how they handle the mistake / accident and see how they recover from it.

i.e. What do they do with the pups? What changes do they make to the kennels? etc.

If there's no changes, or they don't take as careful care of the puppies and finding them homes - then find a new mentor. If they upgrade the kennels, find all of the pups good homes and take care of them as well as any other pup they've produced, then they sound like good people.

Assess each situation on its own merits. ;)
