Help please first time breeder

Hello, I will accept answers from anybody in the Rottweiler world. Listen I have a male that is approximately 5 years in age and my female is about 2 1/2 years in age. She has gone into heat three times since we brought the two together. The first time we thought she was pregnant she got bigger and her milk glands swole up, before we knew it they shrunk back to size and we never saw any puppies. Some have told us of a possible false pregnancy. Well now she went into heat on May 18, 2003 and her glands are looking swollen again however I'm not really sure, my husband who is much better at all this unfortunately was called away to Iraq. I'm stuck here doing all this by myself and I need the best advise that I can possibly get from you guys that know alot on Rottweilers. The thing that bothers me the most is that the female discharges alot and it concerns me. I am not aware of what that means and how to go about getting it taken care of. So if I can kindly get any responses from you guys who have been through these situations couls you please lend me some advise. I greatly appreciate any info that can be given at this time. Desperate to know in Texas :D

My best advice, and probably the advice you will hear most from most of the people here is this, take your dog to the vet.

First take your dog to the vet like stated. But while you are there, get the female spayed and the male neutered. Leave the breeding to the professionals.

I wish the best for your husband's safe return. I'm a career military woman myself and that deployment stuff is close to home here too.

I know you have good intentions. I know it's exciting to think about puppies. I know you love your dogs. I bet all your friends say they want one too.

But...please...stop and learn first. Read, ask questions, and hopefully you will see why so many people (including me) are going to tell you what you didn't expect to read.

Spay and neuter your beloved dogs and enjoy them for the pets they are.

There is so much more to it than putting two intact dogs together.

Casual irresponsible breeding is the main reason there are so many throw away Rottweilers in shelters, running stray, and euthanized every day. The lucky ones get adopted or pulled into a rescue program.

Have you ever wondered why people make such a big deal about hip displasia in large breeds? Where do you think that comes from? Answer: It is genetically passed. Have you had your dogs x-rayed and certified clear from that?

Ever wonder why so many Rottweilers look "watered down" or somewhat mixed? Small heads, long snouts, too tall, too short, flyaway ears, etc? Because they are bred by people who don't know (like the back of their hand) what the correct physique of a Rottweiler is.

Have your dogs ever been critiqued by a professional breed judge (in the show ring?) Will your dogs pass on the proper physical attributes to their puppies?

No...I don't breed. I work in rescue trying to make a dent in the endless supply of throwaways. I guess that explains my passion against breeding non-medically cleared and un-proven in the show ring dogs.

Please...before you get defensive and run off....Click on this link: http://www.rottweiler.on.ca/faq.htm

Hi Ana, welcome.

Dog overpopulation is a terrible problem in this country; honestly I would follow JoJo's advice.

Ana is your husband by any chance stationed at Fort Hood, Texas? Or Fort Bliss? My husband is also in Iraq and we are stationed at Ft Hood.

[quote][i]. The thing that bothers me the most is that the female discharges alot and it concerns me. I am not aware of what that means and how to go about getting it taken care of. :D

I would be very worried about any discharge...this is not normal. :(
She may have an open pyometra or some other type of infection. Please take her in to see a vet.
Listen to what you have been told....get your female spayed and have your male neutered....they will live longer, happier lives. They do not need to be bred
So many Rottweilers are dying because of lack of homes...are you going to be sure that you can take any of the pups you produce back in their lifetime? If would be very sad...but I would say about half of your litter will have been passed into a few different homes or end up in a shelter.

Discharging an excessive amount is a good sign of infection.

Drinking large amounts of water (with a discharge) is a sign of pyometra (which is very dangerous).

If the dog gets pyometra, you won't have to worry about IF you're going to spay her, 90% of the time it's a necessity.

Get her to the vet.

What color is her discharge? If it is anything but a normal cream-colored discharge, get her to the vet as soon as possible!

It is normal for them to have a slight clear or light-cream discharge if they are pregnant, but any other color is cause for alarm, especially this close to whelping. From my calculations, if she was bred on May 18th, you should have puppies already! If she has a colored discharge and she has not started labor, she could very well be in trouble.

Are you prepared for whelping? Do you have an area for her to whelp in that you can keep warm for her and the puppies? Are you prepared to help her deliver if she is unable due to a breech birth or some other complication?

Was she bred on the 18th or is that the first time you saw that she was in season? And you say that she had gone through a heat season three times since you "brought them together." I'm assuming that means that you bred her before she was two and that means that you have not done the proper health checks and certifications on her (and probably not the sire either).:(

Hello.

We're a military family too. I hope your husband comes back safely from Iraq.:)

As for your female rottie, you should take her to the vet and see what's going on.:) She may have an infection and the vet can tell you if she's pregnant or not as well as what you should expect and how to prepare if need be.:)

Please take all the good advice you have been given.

If this was my dog I would have her at the vets URGENTLY. I almost lost a dog many years ago to pyometra and an urgent spay was required to save her life. This was a GSD who was papered and had all health screenings done. I have never bred a dog and have all my dogs neutered. Too many unwanted dogs in the pounds.

Secondly, before breeding your dog I suggest you go to a shelter and see the number of Rottweilers looking for a forever home. This should convince you not to breed your dogs.

You've been given some very solid advice. Going to your vet at this point is not optional.

Please let us know what your vet says.
