If someone approached YOU to buy their puppy???

Ok, there is another message board out there and from time to time I will go to that board and try to get some questions out there for the person selling AKC REGISTERED ROTT PUPS so that anyone looking at that message might see that this person isn't ANSWERING........well, I got a response from a BYB (if not worse) asking if I'm willing to pay X amount and if I'm not going to show am I going to breed.

How would YOU respond? I was CONSIDERING this:

Thank you for e-mail....I must say, however, that I am a little leery of someone seeking ME out to buy one of their puppies. I can't honestly believe that if someone is truly concerned where this breed is headed that that person would seek someone they only know as a screen name.

I must also say that I've seen you on the board before and you seem to be soliciting a LOT of people to buy your puppies (litters?).

May I ask what sort of competitions you are involved in with your dogs? How many dogs do you own? How old are they? What are their AKC registration numbers so that I may research their pedigrees and confirm OFA ratings? How many litters do you produce per year? What makes your puppies worth $X.00 +?

If you feel these questions do not need answers, then I will know you were not the person I wanted to purchase a puppy from to begin with.

Thank you.

What do you guys think??

You've definitely got a good start there, however, I just wanted to add, that just because people put AKC in front of the dogs name, doesn't guarantee anything.....Its hard to believe, but sometimes all too true. You can send them money to belong and register the litter and get that.

I see it all the time in our newspapers here. It doesn't necessarily mean they are not quality, don't get me wrong at all, nothing at all against the AKC.....it just doesn't mean that health guarantees, temperament testing, and all the other things that the breeder should be doing, are guaranteed. That is more of what you really want to know.

Also, another good indication would be the age of some of their older rotties....again, not necessarily a major indicator, but for example, when I was looking around.... a few sites would have the grandmother, shown, and one happened to be 13!!! They were proud of that, and rightly so...as you know in rottie years, that is EXCELLENT. So that also helps, as another tidbit.

I would also ask them what would they do if a pup did not work out, in a home that was placed. EVERY GOOD BREEDER WILL ALWAYS TAKE A PUP BACK. Its not about the money for them. Yes, it helps, but they also should care and if someone is not meant to take care of the pup, etc, or something happens, they will be glad to do this.

Further, you want to know how many litters per year. A good breeder, should not be breeding a bitch more than once a year, I would think (breeders can help me out on this one)
We had a male our first, from a BYB... and he was kicking out pups each time she was in heat...

I hope this helps, its alot to ask, but maybe somehow, if we can change one person's mind about doing the breeding, who just isn't doing it for the love, but rather the money, (BYB) we can help control this mess and stop the overcrowding in shelters.

:(

Lorhel, right, I completely agree with everything you've just stated. What happened was, there was an advertisement on this message board, I posted a reply asking for the parent's AKC numbers so I could look up their OFA rating, I asked what kind of contract they have and I asked what titles the parents had. I was trying to get people to see that she WOULDN'T answer my questions.

I got a response, not from the original poster, from someone wanting to sell me one of THEIR puppies. I've seen this person on the board before........and to EVERY person that is inquiring about puppies, this person is there to say they have a litter. I was almost disgusted that this person contacted me, how many OTHERS from that board have been contacted like this? You know?

I am more looking for something to send to the person that sought ME out.

:o sorry, I didn't catch this quite right.... I am not sure how you would do this, except definitely keep pressing them for answers to the questions you are asking...

It just doesn't sound right at all. :(

I understand completely how one wants to educate and save the rottweiler from idiots but going on a message board that seems to attract any and all trash, why in the world would you give your email address out? Please be careful with that. You never know what's lurking out there. Just concerned for ya.

And to answer your question.....I wouldn't waste my breath for these types of people aren't interested in being educated or could careless on answering your questions. All they care about is the green paper.

A couple of months ago I found another forum and was thinking of getting another fur kid. Someone did send me a "p.m." about their planned breeding. I was not offended that the person sent me some information because they did have what I was looking for in lines etcetra.

I did a search on the user name and learned alot about the "person" who contacted me. By the postings I found it became clear that this one was nothing more than a high class puppy mill.

This posting is good enough in showing them what you feel is wrong. :)
