Will I have trouble selling?

We have a 4 year old male Rott. and a puppy that turns 1 on 01/26/03. We have never bred before and are new to this. Our male got the puppy pregnant after her first heat. We tried our darndest to keep them separated but nature took over...
My questions is, is it a bad thing that our puppy is pregnant from the first heat? Will she know what to do? Will anyone even want these puppies? They are both AKC and German. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome

I won't get into all the usual carrying on - just a question - Is she VERY pregnant or did you just find this out? -

Hi there,

This could be very harmful for your young female, who is still a puppy herself. I would recommend that you bring her to the vet, get her spayed and the litter aborted as soon as possible. While you're at it, get the male neutered, too.

We actually have not confirmed it through the vet yet, but we are pretty sure she is. Her nipples are drooping and my sister-in-law, whom is an experienced breeder, felt her tummy.

Yes, I feel it is a bad thing that your puppy got pregnant. Less than 1 year old is way to young for her to have a litter. I feel a bitch should not be bred until at least 2 years of age. Then you will have had all the test's done on her and possible gotten it some titles like CGC, CD or CDX or other working or conformation titles.
I have no idea what your long term plans are for your pup but if breeding her are not in your plans you can get her spayed and this will also gid rid of the pups in the process.

How far along is she?

Bring her to the vet. Have her spayed and the pups aborted. Problem solved. Lesson learned.:)

I'm sorry but nature did not take over. There are very very few real accidents when it comes to dog breeding.

Yes it is a bad thing your PUPPY is pregnant. If she is less than 5 weeks pregnant you should have her spayed now

If she is more than 5 weeks then perhaps there is a good reputable breeder or a rescue person experienced with whelping litters that lives near you and can help you with the actual prenatal care, whelping, puppycare etc...

Where do you live?

And yes it will be difficult though not impossible to place these pups into carefully screened homes. Both parents do not have their hips and hearts certified (it can't be done til after 2 so I know your girl has not been done) and it was not a carefully researched and planned litter- so that lets out a chunk of people who might have been interested. You will now have to work your butt off careing properly for the pups (if born), socializing and training them right and screening homes

There are members here who can offer youlong distance help but it is always better to have local experienced help

Please keep us posted

The question you asked "will I have trouble selling?"
Sad but true you will probably have no problem selling your pups. Is that the main concern here or the health of your pup?

Well I am actually mostly concerned for our puppy. I will call my ver to see what he suggests and talk it over with my husband. Will there be any reason for her nipples to droop if she's not pregnant? We live in Memphis, TN. to answer your question.

You need to contact the local rescue group and ask that they take over the litter, and that's ONLY if it's too late to terminate, when the pups are old enough. That way they can get these pups some SCREENED homes and these pups will be spayed/neutered PRIOR to placement.

You have no business SELLING these puppies!!!

Let me REPHRASE.........there is NO REASON to sell these puppies!!!

and again, that's ONLY if it's too late to terminate!!!!

If your sister-in-law is experienced, what did she say about this?

When did her heat end? Please bring her to the vet right away. It is possible that she could simply be going into false pregnancy, but you need to get this checked out right away.

Please read this recent thread about what it takes to be an ethical, responsible breeder, so you don't make this mistake again. http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/sho...threadid=20470 Also, please get your animals spayed and neutered, because by producing litters of unplanned puppies you are adding to the already staggering number of unwanted animals in this country.

Well all we can do is wait to see what the vet says. If in fact she is pregnant, then you have some choices to make with your husband. keep us informed.

I have called our vet, and then our old vet. Unfortunatelty they are out to lunch right now and I hope to hear back very soon. I am hoping this is a false pregnancy. I did not keep up, but I believe the heat lasted about 3 weeks. She stays outside most of the time so really I'm not sure. I will keep you posted on this.

Well, I'm thinking if your sister in law is an experienced breeder she should have been able to answer your questions for you.

The first thing I'd do is take the girl to the vet.

If you're not going to spay/abort I would at least have the vet determine how many pups to expect and what your role in the whelping will be. No, she should definitely NOT be doing this alone. If you know the date of the first breeding you could perhaps take her to the vet's in time for her to be whelped by experienced people in a controlled environment. No, it's not cheap, but there's a price to pay for negligence, no? It should be paid by you and not your girl.

While you're there you can ask him/her about the many, many problems that can and often do go wrong during whelping, not the least of which is losing your companion dog. It doesn't look to me like either you or your sister in law is capable of dealing with those problems.

Are you currently training, working, showing your dogs towards achieving any titles or are they just personal pets? If they're personal pets and you're not doing anything with them, why is the male still intact at 4 years of age and the year old bitch not spayed 5 or 6 months ago to prevent her health from being jeopardized.
