I'm so confused. A friend called her vet for me. He says he will not do the procedure without spaying her, because the medicine can cause her to hemmorage. Which is fine, if we abort her, we will get her fixed. But, he is also saying, that her age does not matter. Problems can arise no matter what age she is whelping. Still have not heard from my own vet though. I'm going to see if my husband will take her to the vet this afternoon. Thank you so much to everyone for your advice, I will definately examine my options carefully.

This is true. Pregnancy and giving birth are extremely hazardous no matter what species we're talking about (this is why so many women died in childbirth before modern medicine, and even WITH modern medicine, pregnancy and childbirth are still hazardous). It causes major physical changes and is a huge stress on the body. In very young dogs, it's additionally dangerous because the dog is not mentally mature enough to care for the puppies properly, and may not be physically mature enough to maintain the pregnancy and whelp easily.

Yes, the procedure is not like human abortion where the fetus is vacuumed out and the woman's reproductive equipment is left intact. Abortion in dogs amounts to removing the uterus with the puppy fetuses inside. They'll take out her ovaries, too, and voila, you'll have a spayed dog with no litter to worry about.

Jagar...you've had some great advice here! There's nothing I can add - except you may try calling your local Humane Society. They may well either do inexpensive spay/neutering themselves, or should know vets who will. Call them & see what they say.

My vet charged $155 to spay Daphne, this included the pre-op bloodwork, FWIW.

Good luck getting this sorted out.

Where are you located?

There may be someone on this board that can assist in finding a REASONABLY priced, good vet.

Jagar: Good for you.

In the end by spaying her you'll also remove the chances of her getting reproductive cancers, pyometria, and a host of other such illnesses.

And consider neutering your male. You'd be surprised how many of them become escape artists when they smell a bitch in heat and suffer all kinds of costly and/or fatal injuries as a result.

It's refreshing to see someone take the information to heart.

We know our comments were fast, to the point, blunt...as fast as this thread was moving and as much info as we were trying to get to you as quickly as possible, the niceties sometimes have to be set aside in the best interest of those you're trying to help.

Good luck and please do hang around and keep us informed of how she's doing.

FYI...I was able to talk my vet down to $135.00. (I'm three hours away from you, though.)
You might try the same with a few in the Memphis area. Also, you might find that because of the situation some may be willing to work out payments with you. I know mine did in a desperate poisoning situation with mine.

...just another thought as towards the cost... :)

...and

Wrong. Maturity definitely plays a big part.
I'd definitely find another vet.

The advice given to you is right on! Everyone here has given you the facts about this situation.

I think it's great that you came to this board to learn and get help with this situation. :)

Let me just add that the purpose of this board to to educate and to protect the Rottweiler, with all of the best intentions for the breed.

By listening and your willingness to learn, you'll have made the right choices and decisions.

Today I decided to become a memeber of the Humane Society of the US, and in my membership flyer, it stated a fact. "Over 8 animals per minute are destroyed - a sad and horrible statistic! "

Definitely nueter you male, and spay/abort if it is not too late!

Please let us know as soon as you get back from your vet. :)

I am so glad to hear that you are going to take your pup to the vet. I hope that everything works out ok.

Just so you know, kind of as food for thought, there are 2,243 rottweiler/rottweiler mixes listed on petfinder. Another good reason not to have pups.

Sorry my post is a little "after the fact" but speaking as a retired OB nurse and also as a breeder let me put it to you this way....you ask if her age matters....YES! basically it's just as if a human were to get pregnant on her first period---for example an 11 or 12 year old girl. Does that seem to make a little more sense to you? Yes, she COULD have a baby....although girls this age are considered "high risk" because they have a much higher liklihood of complications in the birthing process and much higher incidence of problems with the newborn. But SHOULD they have a baby at this age....NO! Make sense?
I'm really glad that you are listening to the advice being given here as it's true and given in the best interest of your puppy. I do hope all turns out well for you. Please, follow up as soon as possible with the vet visit--as the longer you wait the more complicated the procedure becomes. If it turns out that she is indeed NOT pregnant this time, please go ahead and have her spayed though and you won't have to go through all this worry ever again. Please keep us posted. Take care.

Virtual Breeding: http://www.bluegrace.com/virtualbreeding.html

"This site has been designed for those who want to learn more about breeding, without actually having to breed their dog.

"It's called the "Virtual Breeding". All incidences referred to within it are based on real life occurrences that have either happened to me, or fellow breeders."

Late, but doubtless informative.

If you needed more encouragement, jagar, to have your puppy's puppies aborted, your puppy spayed, and your male neutered, perhaps this URL will provide such.

Then, after you do all these things, take the time to read thru all the postings here in Breeding. Then when you're done with that, read thru all the postings in Rescue.

Because that's where the lucky dogs produced by people such as yourself end up. The unlucky ones--the VAST majority of dogs bred by the inexperienced--end up in shelters where they stay for a period of time before they're put down.

After you spay your puppy and neuter your male, and read thru the informative posts here, it's likely you'll be amazed you ever wanted to breed.
