please advise re stud dog

Hello all

Can you please help me out a little with some advice for a stud dog contract?
I do a lot of rescue so I have strong feelings about the caliber of dog that should be bred, and plan to breed my male very selectively. As I have not bred before (except for that horrifying accident you may know about), I need advice on what requirements you make of the bitch before accepting the breeding to your male. I feel a tremendous responsibility toward putting more pups on this earth and want to cover the bases. I feel that the male in question can definitely work toward improving the breed in type, temperament, working ability and health, and i want to be sure that he is bred only to females of similar quality. What health screenings do you require and what titles do you like to see? Thanks for your help.

Health Certifications: OFA good hips, eyes CERF'd, patellas and heart

Fee: $500.00 total which includes bitch board (exercise, food etc).
$250.00 is due at breeding and $250.00 is due before the pup's reach 2
weeks of age. No AKC paperwork is signed before the final payment is
made

Bitch Requirements:

1- Bitch must be at least 2 years of age and not more than 6 years of
age

2-hips must be OFA certified, patellas and heart must be clear , a tooth
count must be provided (a signed letter from the vet will be sufficient
to confirm patellas, heart and tooth count), eyes must be CERF'd within
the last 2 - 3 years

3-Bitch must be a good representative of the breed, with a great
temperament and no disqualifyng faults per the AKC standard

4-Negative Brucellosis test within 60 days prior to her arrival here

5- negative fecal exam within the last 30 days and negative heartworm
check within last 6 months

6-Up to date on distemper,parvovirus and rabies. Vaccines must have been
given not less then 30 days prior and not more than 36 months prior to
first day of heat except for rabies which must be current according to
State law ( A titer will be accepted in lieu of vaccinations except for Rabies)

7- IF the bitch is from outside of NH. She must be accompanied by a
current health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian- This is NH
State law

8-Bitch must be flea free and NOT have been treated with any topical
flea treatments (advantage,biospot, frontline, etc) within the past 60
days

9- Pedigrees must be compatible

10- We reserve the right to refuse service to any bitch that we
personally do not feel fits the above criteria or that does not
complement the stud dog

11- owner pays for any and all vet expenses incurred during the bitch's
stay here unless the expense is directly caused by our negligence

12- The bitch must arrives as early as possible in her heat cycle and should stay until she will not stand for the stud dog

Stud Owner Guarantees:

1- bitch will be well cared for as if she were our own dog. She will not
be returned dirty!

2- TWO live and viable pups will be produced and be thriving at 1 week
of age.

3- If TWO live and viable pups are not produced a return service for the
same bitch at the next heat shall be provided OR the initial payment of
$250.00 will be refunded minus $50.00 for bitch care. OUR choice

4- We DO NOT guarantee that show quality pups will be produced, though
of course that is the goal

IF BITCH MUST BE SHIPPED

1- she must have an interstate health certificate signed by a licensed
veterinarian within 3 days prior to shipping. These are only valid for
10 days. IF the bitch must stay longer, the owner will pay for a new
health certificate

2-Call us for airport and crate requirements!

3) That should any pup from the resulting litter need to be re-homed by it's owner, the bitch owner/breeder will take said puppy back

4) Should one of the pups from the resulting litter end up in rescue, the bitch owner/breeder will repay the rescue for all costs incurred and take the puppy back to re-home or financially support the pup until the rescue group can find a suitable home

Diane, just curious... why does your stud contract require no flea product have been used on the female in the 60 days prior to her being bred to your stud dog?

I do not use topicals and feel they are not good for dogs, especially breeding animals. I do not want my males being exposed to those things (if they breed a bitch they will get some on their fur) and surely do not want any babies my boys sire being exposed in utero.

We use no chemicals (haven't in over 8 years and before that we used them very limtedly) at all and have not had any fleas here in 15 years. There are natural orange based shampoos that work well as well as supplements and carpet powders

Just my personal preference based upon my research (of which I ran across an interesting study by a University that showed dogs treated with topicals-including sprays, powders, collars and true topicals- were many times more likely to get bladder cancer- creepy huh)

Stud Dog owner enters into this agreement with the intent to help the Bitch owner to produce healthy puppies which, in both type and temperament, will be good representatives of the Rottweiler breed. To this end, the following items are included in this Stud Contract:

Bitch Qualifications
1. Bitch must be registered by the American Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club and be over 24 months of age. Photocopies of registration certificate required.
2. Bitch must be certified clear of Canine Hip Dysplasia by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. It is extremely desired that the Bitch has a Cardiac Normal clearance from an ACVM Cardiologist, Doppler exam preferred, OFA Normal elbows, and a current CERF number. Photocopies of certificates required.
3. Bitch may have no disqualifying faults per the American Rottweiler Club Breed Standard for the Rottweiler. Bitch must have complete dentition and a correct scissors bite.
4. Bitch must have good temperament, as evidenced by conformation or working titles. If the Bitch is not titled in a way to make good temperament probable, bitch owner agrees to make Bitch available for examination by Stud Dog owner. In cases where the Stud Dog owner cannot meet the bitch, owner will provide current photographs.
5. Bitch owner must provide Stud Dog owner with the bitch's three generation pedigree. Photocopy is acceptable.
6. Bitch owner must provide current brucellosis results, except in the case of fresh-chilled or frozen semen being utilized.
7. Bitch owner warrants that this Bitch has not been exposed to any other Stud Dog from the start of her heat cycle.
8. Bitch must be permanently identified by tattoo, or microchip, or both.

Stud Fees/Expenses
1. A stud fee of (*private treaty*) shall be payable in full prior to the first mating or insemination by cash or certified check.
1A. Certain breedings may be done in exchange for a choice puppy. In the event a breeding is contracted to be done for a choice puppy, this puppy shall be the first pick selection of the Stud Dog Owner, and shall be selected at or near 8 weeks of age. Stud dog owner prefers to be put on the bitch's papers in order to be a breeder of record so as to show the choice puppy in the Bred By Exhibitor classes. In such cases, Stud Dog Owner agrees to sign off the bitch's papers at the time the pick puppy is selected. In the event of a singleton puppy, this puppy shall belong to the stud dog owner. Stud fee puppy shall carry the kennel name of the stud dog owner on the back of the registered name.

Stud fee(s) shall not be refundable in whole or in part for any reason.
2. Bitch owner is responsible for any and all fees associated with breeding, including, but not limited to veterinary Services, shipping fees, ovulation timing or artificial insemination fees.
3. The owner of the Stud Dog guarantees a minimum of three live puppies that live to 7days, and this constitutes a litter. If the Bitch fails to whelp or whelps less than three live puppies, the owner of the Bitch must notify the Stud Dog owner within 7 days of the expected whelp date. If the bitch has less than 3 living puppies on the 7th day post whelping, the Stud Dog owner shall be notified immediately. In these cases, the Stud Dog owner will provide one repeat stud service to this Bitch or a substitute Bitch owned or co-owned by the same owner. In the case of a substitute Bitch, all requirements of the original contract must be met. In the case that the Bitch changes ownership, there is no obligation on the part of the Stud Dog owner to provide a repeat service.
4. A guarantee of a minimum of two matings through natural "tie" or artificial insemination is made. The Stud Dog Owner recommends breeding every other day until the bitch will no longer stand, as a general practice. If, after the second mating/insemination, the Bitch again fails to whelp, the Stud Dog owner will offer services of Stud Dog, only after the Bitch has undergone examination by a veterinarian and ovulation timing. Any attempt to mate/inseminate after the second unsuccessful mating/insemination, will be at no expense to the Stud Dog owner. In this case, Bitch owner will also incur the expense of semen collection if the bitch is to be inseminated.

Puppy Placement
1. Bitch owner agrees to abide by the Code of Ethics of the American Rottweiler Club, and to sell all puppies on a written contract in accordance with the regulations of the American Rottweiler Club. A copy of the contract must be furnished to Stud Dog owner prior to first mating taking place. Furthermore, Bitch owner agrees to sell any puppy with a disqualifying fault per the ARC breed standard, on an AKC limited registration with a spay/neuter contract. For Bitch owners residing in Canada, pups must be sold on "non-breeding" contracts, which can be lifted once pups grow into dogs worthy of breeding.
2. Bitch owner agrees to assume responsibility for any resultant pups for their lifetimes and agrees to accept any puppy that is returned. Bitch owner further agrees to notify Stud Dog owner of any puppy, which results from this breeding, that cannot be kept by it's original owner. In such cases, Stud Dog owner is entitled to the "first right of refusal" after the Bitch owner.
3. Bitch owner agrees to provide the name, address and phone number of each puppy purchaser and also agrees to provide each purchaser with the name, address and phone number of the Stud Dog owner.
4. Bitch owner agrees never to knowingly sell, donate, or in any other way provide any puppy from this breeding to a pet store, commercial breeder, animal wholesaler or broker.

Stud Dog owner reserves the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. All fees are payable in US funds.

Furthermore, Stud Dog owner reserves the right to refuse to breed any bitch that is aggressive to any person while attempting to breed naturally or artificially. In this case, full stud fee, less $200 for expenses, will be refunded.

It is specifically agreed that neither Clearview Rottweilers, nor its agent is required to sign the application for registration of a resulting litter until such time as all expenses and stud fees are paid and all conditions of this contract are executed.

It is understood that in the event of illness or emergency, every available means will be taken to ensure the safety and survival of the Bitch while in the Stud Dog Owner's care. Stud dog owner warrants that bitch will be safely fenced and supervised in such a manner as to be separate from any other male dogs at all times while in the care of Stud Dog Owner. The Stud Dog Owner accepts no liability in the event of any injury, illness, or death due to accident while the bitch is in the care of the Stud Dog Owner. In addition, Stud Dog owner accepts no legal liability for any actions of the Bitch while in Stud Dog owner's care.

Any further agreement between the parties is set forth below:

This contract contains the entire agreement of the parties and shall be construed and enforced in accord with the laws of the State of North Carolina, Rowan County. Both parties agree that there are no other agreements other than those set forth in this document. Any legal action filed by either party in an effort to enforce this contract, will be filed in Rowan County, Salisbury, North Carolina, USA. If any legal action occurs, the prevailing party will be entitled to recover reasonable costs and attorney's fees.
