Marine Corps Gives Aggressive Dogs The Boot - 11Alive.com | WXIA | Atlanta, GA

Marine Corps Gives Aggressive Dogs The Boot

(USA TODAY) -- The Marine Corps has issued the first worldwide policy banning Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Wolf hybrids and any dogs with "dominant traits of aggression" from all U.S. Marine Corps bases and housing facilities, according to Stars and Stripes.

Not everyone agrees with the ban, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Marines with any of the banned dogs can get a waiver by Oct. 10 if their dog can pass a standard temperament test such as the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen Test and the Delta Society's Delta Test. These tests includes items like being friendly with strangers, calmly submitting to petting and behaving well with other dogs. The ASPCS went to three bases in South Carolina to do two days of assessments of dogs, according to a story in The State.

Marines may prefer aggressive pets, according to the article., but the presence of children on bases often leads to aggressive pet dogs being abandoned. This ban could lead to more abandoned pets near bases.

The policy comes as more local governments and public housing facilities are instituting similar bans, said Daisy Okas, a spokeswoman for the American Kennel Club, told Stars and Stripes.

"We're seeing breed-specific bans pretty regularly," she said. "We're very against it. We look at how a dog behaves. It's a frustrating topic."

In order to keep a dog that flunks the test, families would need to move off the base.

It finally happened. I see it took one year to do so, but it's now in the pipeline. Look out to all the other military installations.....it's headed your way!

Don't know why people are shocked, as I've been trying and attempting to report on this issue for over a year...

I am actually surprised it isn't happening at a faster pace.

This has been in the works for a while now. I understand where they are coming from, as illogical as it is. They should have made it dog specific rather than breed specific. What a waste.

Re: Marines banning dangereous breed from there bases

The somewhat good news though is that many bases like Ft. Leavenworth and Ft. Reilly here in KS have adopted more of a "don't ask don't tell" philosophy. Ft. Leavenworth is covered in these breeds. Many were acquired post breed ban.

Ultimately it is a giant crock of .... .

Michelle,

I know this ban was enacted by WAY higher ups, so there is not anything to be done at the base level. Any idea who we can contact?

Re: Marines banning dangereous breed from there bases

Where are there Marines located in Atlanta? The closest Marine base is in North Carolina... ( I maybe getting confused because Atlanta news is reporting this) There are 2 Army bases, and 1 Air Force base in Atlanta vicinity... Pitbulls and Rottweilers are banned from base housing Army wide, if I recall, effective July 2009...

I quess I don't have a problem with this. But it should include all dogs not just the selected few.

Actually the closest Marine base is Beaufort S.C. Home of Mag 32 and next door is MCRD Paris Island. Not far from beautiful Savanah Ga.

I would like to see them give them more time to be able to pass such a test and it should be all dogs or no dogs.

Bill - It's Uncle Sam. What Uncle Sam wants or says; Uncle Sam gets. The only thing "civilians" could do, is to contact their state reps and congressmen/women. However, majority of these people are in favor of BSL as well

This is what happens when owners are REactive insteed of PROactive - it's a little late now...It is what it is.
