Angry So very mad!!!

So, I need to vent. I was looking for a weekend getaway for my husband and myself to take Sage. I found a resort that said pets were welcome and that they LOVED four legged animals.. BUT in fine print said "breed restrictions will apply". So I call, ask about the breed restrictions.. and what do I hear on the other line.. "pit bulls, rotts, dobermans, and any mixed breed that if prone to aggression". As calmly as I could, I stated "Hmmm.. but you allow chihuahuas, dachshunds, poodles, and cocker spaniels, huh?" and hung up the phone... I wanted to say more, but considering I was at work, I dont think my clients or co-workers would apprecite me yelling at someone over the phone! AHHHHHHHH

Re: So very mad!!!

Oh, this type of stuff is so upsetting. We have taken trips, not booked hotels in advance because we have found some days we just can't travel as far as others.

That said, on one excursion we stopped in Ohio for a place. Just off the interstate in close proximity were four hotels. The first three all indicated no dogs over 25 pounds. However, at the third hotel the desk clerk asked us what breed we had...we mentioned rottweiler...he got on the phone...he hung up and told us where to go. Back in the car and just down the road a piece to the fourth and final hotel. No more searching...I went in side, walked up to the desk and laying on the floor behind the clerk was this big handsome rottie. :)

Re: So very mad!!!

I do believe people need to get angry with the insurance companies for they are the ones dictating what type of breed will and will not be welcome.

Insurance companies are dictating your homeowners, medical and whatever else they have their hands in.

Fighting BSL isn't when it happens just to you, people need to start rallying together and fight it on a daily basis BEFORE it effects oneself. That means educating the public, writing letters to your local and state government elected officals, and most of all, showing your own dog off as a great K9 citizen when in public. In other words, set an example.

BSL is on EVERYONES heels and we need to stop it.

Re: So very mad!!!

I just stayed at a Staybridge Suites hotel, and while their policy is 50 lbs, they made an exception (I called in advance.)

I usually stay at a Sheraton where the policy is 80 lbs, and they don't generally have a breed restriction. Again, I called in advance the first time.

Generally though, they rarely ask what kind of dog I have or the weight, I just pay the deposit and go to my room with a dog bed and water bowl.

Re: So very mad!!!

Get it off your chest! There is another way to get the acceptance of our beloved Rotties. Not solely by the strength of their good characters but with the power in our wallets.

The Trail Center At Popular Lake is a wonderful place in Northern MN. The Owner, Sue is a Rottie girl through and through. Her big boy Roger will greet you at the door looking for bellyrubs. The scenary is fantastic, there is lots of room to hike, a lake to swim in and Sunday Breakfast is to die for!!!! It's all about dollars and sense and I do mean sense. Businesses will wise up when their prejudices affect the bottom line. The more places we patronize that welcome our wonderful boys and girls the more the guys down the street will want a piece of the action. Check it out. Anyone else no of a good resort restaurant or coffe house?

Noelle that is what we do too. Just call to ask if they accept dogs and then pay the deposit and straight to the room. We also ask for ground floor in the back. I use my arthritis and light sleeper excuse and it works.

I wonder how the "host hotels" for dog shows/trials get around their insurance policies? I guess money talks.

Re: So very mad!!!

I just read a review on my vet online. One guy had the nerve to say he didn't like it in that office as one woman came in with a Rottweiler which scared his Yorkie who was cowering under his arms! He feels that people in the city -who live in apartments shouldn't have "ponies" living with them! I was fuming at work all day about this. Of course, I replied his Yorkie might benefit from socialization therapy. LOL, I was also wondering was that ME?

Re: So very mad!!!

Well.... I must admit that on several occasions I have had to book a motel on short notice and I don't hassle trying find a rottie friendly place. I just sneak him in the side. Since he is not a barker I have never been caught. Besides, what are they going to do if they catch me? Throw me out?

Re: So very mad!!!

I never tell the hotel clerk, whether in person or calling for a reservation what size or breed dog I have. Only if they ask do I give that information. Just that one time in Ohio did we have the situation where they said no dogs over 25 pounds. One of us always stays in the car with the dog or dogs while the other goes inside. If they don't ask, I don't tell. :)

Re: So very mad!!!

If we are taking a trip we look for private rentals VRBOŽ is Vacation Rentals By Owner. They are more flexible than big business in our experience.

Well, I understand everyone's frustration because I was traveling for about 2 months from Atlanta to Raleigh for a week at a time. At one point during this traveling I couldn't leave my boy in Atlanta because I no longer had the house nor could I leave him in Raleigh because I didn't have an apartment yet, so hotels were an issue. Extended Stay hotels take animals regardless of size as well as Days Inn, Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn.

I often thought about not saying anything and just sneaking him in but there are a few issues for me. 1-Kane is a barker when people walk by the room, 2-there is a fee I'm supposed to pay so it's the same as stealing, 3-the stress of getting caught and kicked out or him sleeping in the car for the night, 4-People with allergies.

Overall it's about the insurance companies and their misinformation on top of irresponsible owners.

Re: So very mad!!!

Well, my second option for a weekend getaway with Sage panned out as well. Once again, they don't allow "aggressive dogs"! Since this is my first Rot, I guess I never realized exactly how bad it really is!! I'm used to Great Danes and Labs, which are usualyl allowed (unless there is a weight restriction, which I think is crazy as well)!

Wow! Enterprise is who I always rent from and while there is an extra charge for clean up if there is an excessive amount of hair I have never heard of that before. How would they even know you had a dog? That's crazy.
