laws in florida?

does anyone know the laws about rotties or dogs in general in florida? the girlfriend and i will be visiting her grandparents come november its really my first vacation ive ever had and we have started planning since we will be driving down from mass and have the 2 dogs with us(rottie and min pin)
im not sure exactly what part of florida well be in, but does it matter?

the dogs are always leashed and never out unsupervised

i just want to be ready for getting stopped for having some "viscious beast" while walking down the street or something

thanks guys!

Re: laws in florida?

I live in Tampa, Florida. There are no exceptional laws for Rottweilers. As long as your dog is leashed during walks, you should have no problems. Have a great vacation!

Re: laws in florida?

I live in Sarasota and I haven't heard about any laws that would pose a problem for you.
Just be sure to keep them on leash for their safety.
You will love Florida in November! It will probably still be beach weather - but you will have to check to see if dogs are allowed on the beach you'll be going to. Not all beaches will allow dogs.
Hope you have a great vacation!

Re: laws in florida?

Only law is the leash law and that is for all breeds. I suggest for you to travel with your dogs vaccination records (ask your vet for copies) or at least their rabies vaccination record as you never know what form of an emergency you may have. I like to be prepared just in case. If you don't have them handy, at least your vets phone number.

Enjoy your vacation, you will love it down here in November. The weather is nice (unless there is a Hurricane)

Re: laws in florida?

i'm in miami.
no breed bans on rotties that i am aware of. only pit bulls are banned in miami.
although i have heard certain housing communities might have an issue with certain breeds.
sure, you might get a smart alec remark, but you would be legal if on leash.
make sure you have a health certificate or proof of vaccines...just in case.

enjoy the weather here!
warm, hot, humid are the most common with a touch of rain(usually instant), and an occassional hurricane(we hope not!).

I'd just like to stress to bring your records with you!! I forgot ours during a road trip from Cali to Texas and forgot that we would have to board Roscoe so the family can spend the day sight seeing. We had already checked out of the hotel. We couldn't board him without record his shots. We ended up placing him in a less expensive hotel that accepted pets. It was an extra $80 and only for a few hours, but well worth it. Roscoe was safe in his kennel with air conditioning. Let me stress the air conditioning because it's Texas and it was near 90 degrees outside!!

Angry Re: laws in florida?

I don't know if you are driving or flying down--if you are driving, I would suggest you map out your route, and check where you plan on stopping as SOME cities do have BSL. It does not matter if you are traveling through or not, they can target your dog. Many cities have laws where it is legal for police or animal control to seize your dog due to breed specific legislation. To get a full list of those cities, you should visit Jan Cooper's page.

Re: laws in florida?

I'm looking for some information as well about the breed restrictions... I'm currently living in Maine and going to be moving unexpectedly to Florida. My fiancee's parents and sister already live there and they each have a rotti (brother's of Janus) of their own. My fiancee tells me that they are having issues with finding a place that will allow the dogs cause of their breeds. He tells me that they are band from some parts of the state. That doesn't sound right to me, so I don't know if he's just trying to get me to give up the pup. If anyone has any info I'd love to get it. We're looking to be somewhere withing an hours drive of of Kissimmee.

Also if anyone has any info on renter's insurance for dog owners... I know some places require some kind of renters insurance if you have a particular type of breed.

Thank you for the info.

Re: laws in florida?

so far, only city with a breed ban is miami, and only pit bulls.
it is hard to get insurance with rottweilers, but you can look around.
various campgrounds have banned potential aggressive breeds(as per them) and rottweilers are included.

Re: laws in florida?

I know State Farm doesn't discriminate against Rottie's. They only ask if your dog has bitten anyone. I have Traveler's, they didn't ask what breed my dog was either. Good luck!
