BSL hits Montreal for Pitbulls... Rotts next?

Ville Marie calling dog owners to heel

Not all the details are contained in this article however this all stems from a homeless man who had 6 pitbulls. There have been a few incidents with his dogs, one where a police officer was bit in the face. Also, the pitbull seems to be the "dog of choice" amongst street kids which also contributed to this proposed ban.

Besides the ban, what scares me the most is that officers will be granted the authority to shoot dogs that are "very dangerous" per the article. For those have visited Montreal, you can surely attest that our police are a bunch of cowboys... a real farce. Giving them this power is very scary.

I am in the process of writting a letter to the borough of Ville Marie and I will be contacting the major newspapers here in Montreal. Since this will be going up for discussion early March, I am sure there will be tons of media coverage. Even though I am not a Pitbull owner, I feel I need to do everything I can... because we all know which breed will be next.

Any throughs/ideas for the letter are welcomed and greatly appreciated! I want to try and muster up as many people as I can to fight this. Every voice counts!

I'm going to be honest here, I do feel that there should be some restrictions placed on pit bulls. A ban is just too extreme, however, a good muzzle order for the breed would be a good step. reason being is that right next door to my parents place is another greek family who's eldest son rather enjoys breeding and his female pit or should i say that rather enjoys collecting the money from the sale of the puppies to everyone. I could attest that after talking to this individual about his program and he does not health checks, doesn't even deworm the puppies, etc. even with the owner there, the bitch didn't want to come approach me and stayed at a distance.

a good proposal would be to regulate this so called unethical breeding programs and start heavily fining the individuals for not providing the basic services to their dogs.

Supporting any kind of restriction on pitbulls, will ultimately lead to the same restrictions being placed on Rottweilers. I have owned and do own both breeds and once again, everything falls down to poor ownership. I'm going to be honest here as well, unless you want to muzzle your dog everytime you leave your property, do not support restrictions on any other breed.

Regulating and fining I agree with.

A similar situation exists here in urban areas of u.k. where every other 'gangster' wants a pitbull as part of his or her attire! The dogs, unwormed, uninoculated, untrained etc, often end up in dog rescue centres (and worse destinations of course) when their 'fashion' role is over. The 'breeders' criminal activities go unnoticed. A neighbour with one of these backyard breeders productions, patrols the local streets wearing a balaclava (in the sunshine). He is 44 years old and his gang are young teenagers. His 'flat' (apartment) is local government owned and is little more than a kennel for his dogs. There is no electricity and his 'pit-bull' type dogs have ripped out the water and sewrage pipes in their boredom and frustration. This typical situation is made possible by these so-called dogbreeders who make money and 'street cred' out of cruelty and ignorance.

To me it all comes back to the one fundamental phrase "punish the crime, not the breed."
Instead of these proposed measures, the local bum should have his dogs removed and any of the street kids who have multiple unliscenced dogs should also have them removed. These poor animals are so neglected.

I don't agree with having to muzzle ANY dog just because of what it is. That is no different then castrating all males because some rape. Totally stupid. Punish anything because of what another did?? Yes, if your dog has a problem... muzzle until it can be corrected.

I have rotts and foster pitties and most were abused. I have NEVER had to muzzle any of them.

Any form of BSL that is supported will come back and bite you in the ass.
