Sick of stereotyping against Rottweilers

I am disgusted of all the insurance policies that put Rottweilers on their black list. It took me a week to find a decent one and they are making me pay a higher premium. I decided to write the following article:

Unfortunately responsible owners are being penalised because of the actions of those who own the breed for the wrong reasons. It would be nice if insurance companies would give appropriate discounts to owners who showed they are responsible by having their dogs pass canine good citizen or some similar scheme to show they know and understand their dog and that they have received a certain standard of basic good manners training.

I had to go through the horrendous search of insurance companies a couple years back. Only a few would take us w/a Rotti. The premium was anywhere from $1800 to $3000 per year. Our Rotti pasted away in Oct. 07. I called our insurance agent to get a better premium. We now pay $800 per year. Premium when down a little over a $1000.
We had to show certificates from the 3 OB classes, a vet stating temperment and a letter from the kennel (used when going away) to state the temperment.

I am currently dogless. I don't know when I will open our home to another one. The biggest thing on my mind is the insurance. I feel I was penalized for others wrong doing.

I don't know if they write policies in your area, but try State Farm. They don't ask what breed you own and only said that if there was ever an incident, then the dog would be omitted from that point forward.

I also have State Farm (sadly, they are only stateside), and I strongly encourage ALL State Farm policy holders to write a note of thanks to them for NOT discriminating against us, and our breed. By doing so, it will reinforce their actions, and hopefully they will continue to provide policies to all dog owners despite the dogs breed. It also shows our gratitude to the company. State Farm also supports Dog Bite Prevention education, and provides education material for free to those who teach DBP.

Thanks for the info on State farm, this has been a hassle because our cars are insured with a company that has Rottweilers blacklisted, so I had to cancel both cars in order to bundle with a home insurance that is unbiased.

I have done this for our agent. Also keep in mind that many agents give a reward/kickback or whatever you want to call it if you refer someone else to them. I am always trying to get as many people as I can to go with our agent. Not for the kickback but to show support to a company who doesn't discriminate against certian breeds. My agent one time asked me if I wanted a job there:)

I also tell people when they switch to write a letter to their old insurance company telling them why they changed. Just be sure to mail the letter to the home office and not the agent. This way the corporate headquarters know the real reason and the agent can't make excuses as to why they are losing customers.

This is a great idea. I think I too will send a letter to my State Farm agent.

I might get a lot of flak for this but here it goes i believe that insurance companies should not only offer you the same rates as dogless households but a discount as well of course providing docemenation that the dog is well mannerd possibly even certifaces of training etc every neighborhood that i have lived in with my dog has felt safer and more secure just the mere presence of him is a huge deterant against criminals i use to install security alarms as a job and belive me they are not worth the money even a chiawawa (cant spell) is worth far more than any alarm let alone a rottie there should be some sort of federal gov aproved training for dogs espicaly big dogs that allow a discount on insurance as it provides a deterant and protection (providing the dog is properly trained) for not only your home but the community as a whole

USAA is good if you are eligible. I called them from overseas (Korea) to get ins. for the car I just bought and had dog added to my homeowners within 5 min.

Yes if you qualify, USAA is awsome insurance. They don't charge more for having a dog. I have two Rottweilers. When I called to find out if they would cover them they said yes. Didn't even raise our rates. I am a contractor by trade and work with a lot of insurance companies. USAA is awsome when it comes to auto and homeowners policies also.

We have State Farm, but with that being said, I wish it was that simple and easy to just choose what insurance company you want down here in the state of Florida. There are sooooooo many homeowners that have literally been dropped by their insurance company which includes State Farm that now they have to go with the government insurance just to protect themselves. I don't know if they breed discriminate or not. BTW, all the insurance hoopla is from the nasty hurricane season we had a few years back. It was OK to take the peoples money when times were calm and relaxing, but when all hell breaks out and they have to pay out, they literally bail out, make it difficult to collect or charge such an outrageous price no one could afford it!
