TN - next state on the BSL chopping block

http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/b...ILL/SB2738.pdf

Not sure if I can do this without it being removed, but I got e-mail addresses for all the members involved in the state:

sen.mae.beavers@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.doug.jackson@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.jamie.woodson@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.diane.black@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.jim.kyle@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.beverly.marrero@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.mark.norris@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.paul.stanley@legislature.state.tn.us
sen.john.wilder@legislature.state.tn.us

And the senator responsible for the bill in the first place:
sen.tommy.kilby@legislature.state.tn.us

So far, this is 'pit-bull' breed BSL, but we all know if they get away with this, the rotts could be next. I've written them all and have posted to as many of the forums as I can think of.

This BSL BS is getting old.....

Re: TN - next state on the BSL chopping block

Not being very well versed in how this operates other than taking away our rights to own our dogs, how do they determine exactly who owns a specific breed? Do they go by registration with the city, town or other means such as well, it looks like one? My dopey city has Buddy down as an Akita although this is not what he was last year and not what I put down on the registration. Also if someone has a Rottie who is not AKC or registered anywhere else as a Rottie, who's to state that it is a Rottie?

Re: TN - next state on the BSL chopping block

Hey Moz, there were some recent passages in certain areas of OR and ID when I lived in OR and of course there is the infamous Denver, CO history of enforcement. In those places they used the paperwork filled out by the owner on the Dog License application to determine the breed of dog and hence enforcement. So basically the owners provided the information and in Denver for example they simply created a list of licensed pitbulls within the city.

Re: TN - next state on the BSL chopping block

In many cities and towns, it's based on what they 'think' the dog looks like. I've heard of Labs being labeled pit breeds. So, to some of the yutzes that work in the political ring, any black and brown dog could be a rottie. Idiots probably think young yorkies are furry baby rotts.

Sometimes. But often with actual enforcement it is really according to what you say your dog is. While I license my dogs b/c it's the law I am always a little leary of having to write Rottweiler on the license application because I know if it came to a breed ban this information would be used.

Re: TN - next state on the BSL chopping block

Well, I am going to keep my mouth shut at this point, it was their mistake putting him down under another breed. I also haven't received is new registration yet- check cashed in November! When I called, they just told me not to worry as they are backed up!

They have him down as an Akita- yep, a black and tan Akita. He transformed from last year -Rottie to Akita?! Tricky little bugger.
Next year, who knows!

Re: TN - next state on the BSL chopping block

Next year cross your fingers that he becomes a lab. While bite stats and fatal attacks by labs are recorded I sincerely doubt this breed will ever be mentioned as one for which BSL is needed.

Re: TN - next state on the BSL chopping block

The prejudice is incredible. At work I tend to wear my doggie scrubs and of course people know I'm a dog lover. When they ask what breed I have I get the "ohhhhhh", or "a WHAT"?! One of my bosses even told me to wait until he attacks my son! Luckily, I work with my best friend who knows Buddy very well and will always defend him. My other boss owned a Rottie so him and his wife have a soft spot. I keep pics of my 10 yo son and Buddy up for all to see.
My friends lab attacked her Downs syndrome son who needed 75 stiches in the face. I always tell that story and tell them my son has no scars from either of our Rotties but does have from our mix. His whole life minus 3 mths has been with a Rottie. I hate when they defend the lab with "but the damage isn't what a Rottie can do"! I've heard this so many times! How lame! An attack is an attack, period.

There have been 7 labs PTS here under the dangerous dog laws but you never hear ban the lab... While bsl varies from place to place, i can't think of a single discussion of bsl for labs... So again, keep your fingers crossed!

OMG!!! That's awesome!! I have something to celebrate tonight!!

As for the whole lab thing, the lady that had her face transplanted - that lovely removal work was done by a lab. And for some reason when the story was in the papers, never once did they mention the breed of the dog that did it.

I'm telling you it is one breed (Goldens too) that gets a free pass! Mental note to self, if you live in an area where rottweiler BSL passes dye the tan markings black and state your dog is a black lab.
