This is such a tragedy! It sounds like a case of irresponsible owners having a dog for the wrong reasons!

Re: such a shame...

The whole situation sounds like a recipe for disaster. Unless I knew the dog, there's no way I would leave my baby anywhere near it. I'm also not quite sure why police were the ones to find the baby. Why was 911 not called?

Re: such a shame...

I think the choice of words used in the report were to make it sound more hyped. Shady reporting is what it is.

Police found the girl Wednesday inside the home.

But in the video, they said 2 teens wrestled the dog off the baby, but it was too late.

The rottweiler, which was visiting the home with its 19-year-old owner, somehow got loose and attacked the baby.

The video has the homeowner's brother'in law describing that the "dog came out of nowhere" What does that mean, if the dog was visiting with its owner? How did the dog "get loose", or was he already loose? Probably if they were in the home, visiting.

It really is scary how people don't understand that many dogs don't see baby's as "people", they view them as prey unless they've been taught early on.

Re: such a shame...

This is inexcusable.
I know and love my Dodge very much, he is the most gentle and kind dog ever. However that being said, when my new baby grandchild comes to visit this winter, there is NO way I will not know every second where the baby AND the dog are at all times PERIOD.
I know what's coming, the owners will say the dog is a big baby, he loves other dogs, kids, cats, etc.
NEVER EVER leave a small child and a dog alone. How many times does this need to be said?
This makes me want to puke.

Re: such a shame...

I dont beleive any dog should be left alone with a child, I do care if its a rott, a pit or even a lab, My FIL has a lab that adores my kids, but she is getting up thre in age and has arthristis and I do not allow them to be alone with her, nobody not even people on here can say to 100% accuracy that their dog will not bite!

Re: such a shame...

The training/behavior center where I take my dog is currently making a training video on how to work with your dog before you have a baby. So many people think dogs will just adjust. Ask any new parent how hard the adjustment is for them!

This is really sad! Another reason why dog crates are a valuable tool.

Re: such a shame...

the way it sounded to me when I heard it on detroit news this morning was he wasnt friendly and had to be locked away, the teen mother did not know he was out and left the baby for an instant, I dont blame her its a terrible tragedy, Dog are that DOGS and I cant blame a parent for a dog bite unless that person is the one for making the dog aggressive or not getting its aggression under control and keeping others safe from him/her when company is over.

Re: such a shame...

I just read another variation of that story from a different site where dog was said to be about 120lbs, sounds like there are some inconsistencies in the story.

Re: such a shame...

WOW, what a day.
Here is a bit from the second story

Investigators said O’Neal was not at the home when the dog, a Rottweiler, bit the pair but returned to take them to the hospital.
The dog has been taken into police custody and the incident remains under investigation.

I really don't know what to make of it. I would trust my dog at home with a friend and their kid assuming I knew the adult well and that they would not let the kid harrass the dog.
I am going to bet that the three year old did something the dog did not like and that the mom stepped in and got bit too. How very sad, and more fuel for the fire.
Unfortunately, most of the good things our dogs do don't make headlines. SIGH.

Re: such a shame...

i TOTALLY blame the owner AND the mother. she KNEW there was a dog in the house but left her kid "for a minute".

Well, a minute is all it takes. Take drowning, for instance. "I only left my kid by the pool for a minute."

Anyway, shame on her and the owner for putting an incompetent person in a position of incompetency.
