Animal Ordinance Debated

Updated: Dec 7, 2006

Tonight pet owners had the chance to voice their opinion about the proposed animal ordinance in St. Joseph County.

At one time the ordinance specifically named Pit Bulls as a dangerous dog. The breed is no longer listed in the ordinance but dangerous dogs are still clearly defined.

Most St. Joseph county residents won't be affected by the dangerous dog definition though as much as they are by the licensing requirements
In this ordinance pet owners whose dog, cat, and ferret is spayed or neutered, up to date on their rabies shots, and micro-chipped must pay for a 10 dollar license every three years.

If you don't have your pet spayed or neutered or its not micro-chipped you'll have to pay more for your pet license.

Overall the wording though in this ordinance gives the St.Joseph County Humane Society more “bite" when they are looking into animal abuse or neglect cases.
