Los Angeles County BSL

Does anyone know where I can get updated info on the ban in Los Angeles? Did it pass? Is it breed-specific still or did they open it up to all breeds ??(spay/neuter law)
Thank you.
A proud & responsible Rottie owner.....
Kelly

Re: Los Angeles County BSL

It was passed yesterday. IF you live in LA county, and not in city limits (tho the county is asking the cities that make up the county to also enact the same) your dog will have to be spayed or neutered at 4 months of age unless it is a police dog, service dog for the disabled or a competition dog. This will take effect in 30 days, but with a grace period of 90 days to get your dog spayed or neutered or satify the requirements for the above exceptions.
Police and service dogs are pretty self explanitory. Competition dog is any dog that has earned a title from a recognized registry (AKC, UKC, etc) is registered with a recognized registry and has competed in a recognized event in the last year. If your dog is too young or has not met the entry requirements, then you, as the owner, has to belong to a recognized breed club that requires you to not breed any dog that has a genetic condition that can be potentially crippling or fatal. The problem with that is that there are NO breed clubs that satify this requirement. Therefore your young puppy will be in violation and has to be fixed before it has a chance to enter a show or competition.
Every place I said, "recognized", that is recognized and approved by LA county Animal Control. They can very easily decide that what you compete in isn't "good enough", ie USRC, AHBA, ASCA, USDAA, etc.

Re: Los Angeles County BSL

You said "not in city limits...." I live "in" a city that IS incorporated, so as of now I do not have to comply??? I live in Palmdale, is there a list of cities where I can see if I qualify to be "exempt" (Im a bit confused)... Thank you so much!

Correct. If you live inside the city limits of an incorporated city, you do not have to comply unless your city joins the bandwagon and passes its own law. So for the time being you are "safe" from this law. If you do not want to be affected, you need to start lobbying your city concil members to not vote for this. Ask them to wait a year or two to study what the effects are on the county. See if it really does what it is advertised to do. Mention that there are several federal lawsuits that have been filed. It might be in the city's best interest to see how it all works out before they act.
