Breed Bans and the FCI

A senior member of the Spanish Kennel Club recently faxed the FCI to ask why there were no public statements or policy concerning breed specific legislation. This is the reply that he received this week.

Dear Sir,
We are in receipt of your fax.
It should be made clear that as long as the issue is not brought on
the EU scene, the FCI has no chance to interfere. The issue "dangerous
dogs" affects each country individually.
On the other hand, you should not make any comparison between the FCI
and clubs like the AKC or The Kennel Club. These are national clubs and
we are a federation of clubs.
With regard to the European Convention to which you refer, the FCI
took part to the debates and as far as I know, these were only
recommendations (about tail docking and ear cropping, breeding of
hairless dogs, etc.) and no official decision has ever been made.
I trust the above will be of help,
Yours sincerely
