"A Changing Public"

Good article in the AKC Gazette,October 1999, Vol. 116, No. 10: "A Changing Public; Animal rights extremist groups influence public opinion in ways that threaten responsible dog fanciers." By Diane Vasey. This is available on newsstands, $4.99.

Nancy I plan on buying the magazine, but as an animal rights activist could you please give me some insight for now?

I have heard some people say that PETA is trying to stop people from owning dogs/cats etc. Though I'm sure most will agree not everyone deserve a companion animal. If you are talking about mandatory spaying/neutering, yes, that we are trying very hard to implement. However, we would like to see a process that would require the breeder to obtain a permit at a cost that would be to high for the "backyard breeder types." To register a litter it should take a little more than both parents being AKC. I have spoken to reputable breeders and they are actually for it.

I know I should read it before say this, but these seem to be the common issues.

Well, the November Gazette just came out so this issue might not be on the newsstands. But I'll give you a run-down of the topic headings; it is a fairly long article. And the author does make a distinction between animal rights organizations (PETA)and animal welfare organizations - Defining the Issues; The Strategy of Illusion and Confusion; Direct Hits to Dog Fanciets and Pet Owners; Common Sense May Not Be So Common; What You Can Do. If you want you can email me your address & I can send you a xerox of the article.

Does anyone see a real problem by stopping the over population and killing millions of unwanted pets. Thats what it basically comes down to. We talk about ethical breeders but how many are really out there and the ones that are out there should be in favor of this not against. Look at what has happened to the Rottweiler at the hands of people who are just in it for the money. We are not trying to take away peoples right we are just trying to give some the animals.

On this forum, I think it's a matter of "preaching to the choir". I don't think there's anybody her that would be against stopping over-population and the resulting mass euthanasia. As far as legislation requiring fees/permit/etc. - it's going to be state-by-state, city-by-city. This isn't something that would be regulated by the Federal Government so asking if people are in favor doesn't mean anything. As far as PETA goes, they have stated that nobody should own pets, much less breed animals; this also extends to farm animals, beef cattle, you name it. And, yes, I agree with the book title MARYDVM posted - the animal welfare movement has been hijacked by animal rights activists.

Nancy-

I have been out of my office. I would just like to say that I don't think we would die if we stopped eating animals. In fact,we would live alot longer. Now you might say I have the "right" to eat what I want but that is infringing on another beings "right". If you say I have the "right" to wear strips and checks together, I don't think a group will form tomorrow to stop you because it isn't hurting another being. As far as companion animals, we domesticated them and we owe them a place in our lives. If we could go back in time, after what I've seen (like the case with Hope) I do think they would be better off without our interference. I think some people who love their animals and dedicate a large part of their lives to them forget that most animals aren't cared for or loved at all. In fact until recently most didn't consider an animals emotional state as long as it had food and water and occassional vet treatment that was the norm. Now more and more people are looking at dog food labels or adding another pet to the household; understanding that most animals like animal companionship. PETA and New Jersey Animal Rights are campaigning right now to make it illegal to continuously chain a dog outside. I think we may be on the same side, animal rights groups aren't out to get the good we're just trying to stop the bad.

Hi all,
Sorry I have not been over here in a long time, but I do monitor the conversations.

I am delighted to see this forum growing and the interest to protect OUR rights gathering momentum, however I wish to remind everyone here that this is a forun set aside for breed-specific legislation so perhaps we can make our notes relate to either proposed or actual breed-specific legislation. Of course that also includes opinions on the various pros/cons of such legislative actions and those in support or opposition.
Thanks
