Just read an article from the 6/7 Burlington (VT) Free Press entitled "Council to discuss dog attacks". According to the article the city council was to meet Monday night to decide what to do about a dog who had allegedly bitten two people standing in front of a Service Merchandise store, unprovoked. The council is required to meet when medical treatment results from an attack. The dog, described as "a black and tan rottweiler ...has attacked three people in three months" and had apparently been living in a car with his owner. I guess the council, on a case by case basis, decides what course to take (i.e. requiring the dog to be muzzled, confined or destroyed. When I called the city council to find out what happened, they said before the meeting could occur, the owner turned the dog over to the city which then had it euthanized. As a result of this and other incidents (the same article also discussed an attack by a GSD on a neighbor's 13-year-old son), the council might be revisiting the city's "vicious dog ordinance". Fortunately the people involved were not hurt badly, but the whole thing is so sad for all involved. |
