ALERT: BSL in North Little Rock, Arkansas

posted for Jan Cooper

I am so infuriated....here is what I just learned from Stephanie Ortel, AKC legislative Dept...URGH and after calling Arkansas to get additional details!!!!!!!!

North Little Rock, Arkansas' MAYOR and city council quietly voted in breed specific legislation last month.

Following is what I have put together at the BSL site until I get the ordinance typed up.

Come on folks we MUST stay awake, this was supposedly passed on the 23rd....with NO public notice....

ALL licenses for all intact pit bulls , bull terriers etc or any mixes thereof and all rottweilers or any mixes of rotties will be required to pay $500.00 annual licensing fees.

Saginaw Michigan had a similar law on their books for 11 years that only required an additional $10.00 fee and they just
rescinded it this year "because they could NOT ENFORCE IT....."

If you want to help get this rescinded you may contact:

The BSL site has been on the web since 1994 and was started as an 'offshoot' of my newsletter, the Rott N Chatter. It is the only site of its kind and I try to stay ontop of all BSL worldwide. I work closely with ADOA and AKC. Have been an AKC legislative Liaison since its inception in 92.
I also have several letters that I have drafted up onsite for folks to use if they do not know what to say when in opposition to a BSL proposal. One is drafted so that it can be read into the minutes. Please feel free to make comments or use in any way you wish....Keep up the great work!!!

Does Arkansas really care about what a resident of California thinks of their breed specific laws?

If you think it will help, I will send a letter, fax, etc. or do whatever I can.

You bet it helps.
The Baltimore Sun ran a local story about how the legislators were bombarded with phone calls and e-mail from all over the country and as far away as California and that made them withdraw their BSL proposal.
So it does work, I can recite MANY accounts where faxes, phone calls, emails and letters from even other countries made legislators change their approaches to BSL. The biggest was in Washington DC in 1996 with our March of only 20+ folks, but coupled with the email etc. we won BIGTIME there.
