| The truth about HSUS and breed bans ! Once again, I did my homework before accusing ( hint ) Please read the following response from HSUS .... Dear Mr. Reif. This is absolutely untrue. This information apparently is being passed around by dog fighters and irresponsible pit bull breeders. The HSUS never has and currently does not support breed specific legislation. Thank you for writing to get the factual side of our position on this issue. John M. Snyder, Director of Program Management Companion Animal Section The Humane Society of the United States 2100 L Street NW Washington DC 20037 301-548-7794 office 301-258-3081 fax www.hsus.org |

| Well Reif, Here's the response I got; Dear Mr. Ferguson, Thank you for writing. I am not sure of the source of your information, but it is incorrect. The Washington DC City Council is considering the passage of a pit bull ban. The Washington Humane Society who provides animal control enforcement to for the city, asked our review of the ordinance. The Humane Society of the United States is also headquartered in Washington D.C. There are some very good provisions in their ordinance, however the Humane Society of the United States at this time does not support breed specific legislation. This proposed ordinance contains provisions to ban pit bulls from the city limits. Because we did not condemn the entire ordinance, it is now being reported we support breed specific legislation. Many cities are now considering pit bull bans. The problem has reached epidemic proportions. Clearly pit bulls kill more humans than all other breeds of dogs combined. Also pit bull attacks are usually among the most serious of all dog bites. Existing laws do not seem to be solving the problem. The public is terrified of pit bulls, and are demanding their elected officials do something. Hence pit bull bans. Our recommendations on this issue, only have so much weight. We as an agency are very concerned about where this issue is headed. However, in closing let me assure you we do not support breed specific legislation at this time. Sincerely, John M. Snyder, Director of Program Management Companion Animal Section The Humane Society of the United States 2100 L Street NW Washington DC 20037 301-548-7794 office 301-258-3081 fax John M. | Quote- "..Because we did not condemn the entire ordinance, it is now being reported we support breed specific legislation..." SO, I would say the real question is what part did they not condemn. If they advocate specific requirements for bit bull owners such as testing for good temperment - I'm on their side ! |
